2022 ACC Championships: Virginia Sets Records, Stays Undefeated in Women’s Swimming Events
During the first two days of the ACC championships, the University of Virginia were been the dominant team in women’s competition, and that trend continued on day three. Virginia opened up Thursday’s session with a record-breaking swim in the 200 medley relay, the Cavaliers’ second American and NCAA record relay of the meet, and then the Cavaliers grabbed all three individual swimming wins on offer. Ella Nelson and Emma Weyant went 1-2 in the 400 IM, and Kate Douglass cruised to first place the 100 fly. Finally, Alex Walsh swam a time that topped last year’s NCAA winning time in the 200 free.
Virginia has now opened up a 76.5-point lead in the team competition over top rival NC State. The Wolfpack have shown tremendous depth over the first half of the conference meet with reigning NCAA champions Sophie Hansson (100 breast) and Katharine Berkoff (100 back) set to compete in their signature events Friday.

Women’s 200 Medley Relay
The University of Virginia women have done it again. In the 200 medley relay, the team of Gretchen Walsh, Alexis Wenger, Lexi Cuomo and Kate Douglass swam a mark of 1:31.81, more than a second faster than the previous American and NCAA record of 1:32.93.
The Cavaliers owned the previous mark from exactly one year previously at the ACC Championships, and three of the swimmers were back from that 2021 squad. Caroline Gmelich, last year’s backstroker, graduated, Walsh stepped into her shoes and led off in 22.82, the fastest 50-yard backstroke performance ever recorded. Michigan’s Maggie Mac Neil owned the previous top mark at 23.02. Wenger then split 25.77, and Cuomo swam the butterfly in 22.68 before Douglass came home in a blistering 20.54. Virginia was able to break the record without versatile star Alex Walsh competing, allowing her to focus on the other four relay events.
NC State finished second in the event in 1:33.25 with Katharine Berkoff, Sophie Hansson, Abby Arens and Kylee Alons. That time was only seven hundredths slower than the Wolfpack swam to win the event at last year’s NCAA Championships, and NC State ranks as the second-fastest team in the nation so far this season behind Virginia.
Finishing third was the Florida State team of Tania Quaglieri, Nina Kucheran, Jenny Halden and Rebecca Moynihan in 1:35.40.

Women’s 400 IM
Virginia’s Ella Nelson finished second in the 400 IM at the NCAA Championships last season, and she tuned up for a return to the national level by winning the event at the conference championships. Nelson led wire-to-wire in this one, and she pulled away with her signature impressive breaststroke split. Nelson finished in 4:02.11, breaking her own meet record of 4:02.62 set last season, and she slightly improved upon her own season-best time of 4:02.19 set at the midseason Tennessee Invitational. Nelson ranks third in the nation behind teammate Alex Walsh (4:01.40) and Tennessee’s Ellen Walshe (4:01.53).
Second place went to another Virginia swimmer, Emma Weyant. Weyant, the silver medalist in the 400-meter IM at the Tokyo Olympics, swam a time of 4:04.90 to move to sixth in the national rankings. If Walsh indeed swims the 400 IM at the NCAA Championships, the Cavaliers would be poised to put three swimmers in the A-final in the event.
Third went to NC State’s Grace Sheble in 4:05.61, while NC State fifth-year swimmer Kate Moore, the ACC champion in the 400 IM in 2019 and 2020, took fourth in 4:06.66.

Women’s 100 Butterfly
Just over an hour after she anchored her Cavalier teammates to an American and NCAA record in the 200 medley relay, Kate Douglass blasted a 49.86 to win the 100 fly. Douglass ranks seventh all-time in 49.55, which she swam on her way to second place at last year’s NCAA Championships (behind Maggie Mac Neil), and she was just three tenths off that mark in the ACC final while cruising to the win. Douglass has built a résumé as one of the country’s most versatile swimmers, but she is almost certain to compete again in the 100 fly at this year’s national meet.
NC State’s Kylee Alons placed second in 50.82, just ahead of Louisville’s Gabi Albiero in 50.90.

Women’s 200 Freestyle
During last year’s collegiate season, Virginia’s Alex Walsh captured the national title in the 200 IM but did not finish in the top three in her other individual events. In the 200 free, she placed fifth while teammate Paige Madden dominated to win the national title in the event. But at the ACC Championships, Walsh led wire-to-wire in the 200 free, and she put up a time of 1:42.28 to win the event by almost two seconds. The time ranks second in the nation behind Lia Thomas (1:41.93).
Walsh also split 1:41.63 while anchoring Virginia’s 800 free relay Tuesday night, but she still may not swim the 200 free at the NCAA Championships. She currently has the nation’s top time in the 400 IM, so there’s a strong chance she opts for that event on the middle day of the national meet.
Second place here went to Duke’s Sarah Foley, who also placed second to Walsh in the 200 IM. Foley swam a time of 1:44.10, while Virginia Tech’s Emma Atkinson touched out Virginia’s Reilly Tiltmann for second, 1:44.32 to 1:44.37. Both Tiltmann and Foley swam much quicker leading off the 800 free relay, with Tiltmann swimming a 1:43.53 and Foley clocking a 1:43.85.
