The North Carolina State men have been comfortably ahead of the competition all week at the ACC Championships, and they kicked off the final night with a huge performance in the 1650 freestyle. Members of associate head coach Mark Bernardino’s distance group finished 1-2-4-5 in the mile after previously going 1-2-3-4 in the 500 free. After that, the Virginia Tech Hokies posted an incredible evening of racing to claim three individual wins: Sam Tornqvist in the 200 back, Youssef Ramadan in the 100 free and Carles Coll Marti in the 200 breast.
Finally, NC State ended the meet by holding off Virginia’s Matt King to win the 400 free relay, and the Wolfpack finished with 1501.5 points to win by more than 300 points.

Men’s 1650 Freestyle
Just like the 500 freestyle earlier this week, NC State was dominant in the 1650 free. Will Gallant of the Wolfpack pulled away from Georgia Tech’s Mert Kilavuz and then from his own NC State teammate Ross Dant to pull away and win the title. Gallant touched the wall three seconds ahead of the field in 14:33.40,while Dant, the 500 free winner, placed second in 14:36.71. Gallant moved to second in the national rankings behind American-record holder and two-time Olympic gold medalist Bobby Finke, while Dant checked in at No. 3 in the national rankings.
Kilavuz ended up third in 14:43.26, while two more NC State swimmers completed the top-five. Eric Knowles was fourth, and James Plage, the 500 free winner, took fifth.

Men’s 200 Backstroke
Virginia freshman Jack Aikins led the 200 back final through 150 yards, and he was up by almost eight tenths with 50 yards to go. However, Aikins faded badly at the end as Virginia Tech’s Sam Tornqvist surged home with a 25.29 final split. Tornqvist hit the wall in 1:39.20, upending Cal’s Daniel Carr (1:39.23) as the top-ranked swimmer in the country.
Aikins ended up second in 1:39.53, moving to fourth in the national rankings, while NC State’s Hunter Tapp (1:39.60) and Louisville’s Nick Albiero (1:39.70) finished just behind Aikins.

Men’s 100 Freestyle
Virginia Tech’s Youssef Ramadan won his second title of the week in the men’s 100 free. Following his scintillating 44.08 in the 100 fly and a third-place finish in the 50 free, Ramadan swam a time of 41.76, good enough to touch out Virginia’s Matt King (41.89). Ramadan moved to fifth in the national rankings in the 100 free, and it was the second straight event win for the Hokies after Sam Tornqvist’s win in the 200 back.
Behind runnerup King, Virginia swimmers also occupied the third and fourth spots with Connor Boyle (42.09) and Matt Brownstead (42.14). Boyle, swimming in lane eight, was actually first at the halfway point before Ramadan and King surpassed him on the home stretch.

Men’s 200 Breaststroke
Virginia Tech continued its magnificent final night of men’s racing as Carles Coll Marti grabbed the victory in the 200 breast. Coll Marti trailed Georgia Tech’s Caio Pumputis after 50 yards before opening up a slight lead over the middle portion of the race. On the final 50, Coll Marti held off a late surge from Louisville’s Denis Petrashov and touched the wall in 1:51.69, two tenths ahead of Petrashov’s 1:51.89. Those swimmers became the sixth and seventh-fastest performers in the nation this season. Third place went to Pumputis in 1:52.19.

Men’s 400 Freestyle Relay
NC State had already clinched the men’s title at the ACC Championships prior to the final relay, but the Wolfpack finished with a flourish in the 400 free relay. Luke Miller led off in 41.72, faster than the winning time in the 100 free earlier in the night, and he was followed by Bartosz Piszczorowicz (41.45), Noah Henderson (41.64) and Hunter Tapp (41.37). Tapp unleashed an impressive performance on the anchor leg, and he needed every bit of that to hold off Virginia.
NC State touched in 2:46.18, a quarter-second ahead of Virginia’s team of Matt Brownstead, Jack Aikins, Connor Boyle and Matt King. King anchored in 40.78 to nearly catch NC State.
Virginia Tech’s Youssef Ramadan, Carles Coll Marti, Antani Ivanov and Luis Dominguez Calonge placed third in 2:48.03.
