2022 ACC Championships, Day 3 Prelims: Virginia Takes Three More Top Seeds
It’s Day 3 of the 2022 ACC Championships, and we’re still waiting for the first race in which the University of Virginia fails to pick up a victory.
Well, if the seeds holds, it looks like the wait could drag on to Day 4. UVA swimmers picked up the top seed in each of the three preliminary events (and a casual meet record by Kate Douglass) in Thursday’s session, setting up a chance for more hardware in the night session as the Cavaliers parade toward another title.

Women’s 400 individual medley
With a pair of 4:02s and nothing else below a 4:08, the IM was setting up as yet another UVA plaything. So it counts as a minor surprise that Grace Shelbe of NC State broke the duopoly in prelims with a 4:07.36, a season-best.
The race in finals, though, is likely to come down to Margaret Nelson, the top seed and meet record holder who set the pace in 4:06.48, and Emma Weyant, who claimed the third seed in 4:07.80.

Men’s 400 individual medley
What Virginia is doing in the women’s race, NC State is more or less achieving on the men’s side. Michael Moore fired the opening salvo on that front in the 400 IM with a win in 3:42.89 in the morning. Teammate Eric Knowles is third in 3:44.49. In between is Virginia Tech’s Filip Dal Maso.

Women’s 100 butterfly
Kate Douglass setting a meet record in prelims is bad news for the field, though it’s par for the course given how outstandingly she’s swimming. Douglass ripped a 49.94 in prelims, her fastest of the season, to trim .02 off the meet record she set last year. The conference record stands at 49.43 (Kelsi Worrell in 2017), while the ink is barely dry on Claire Curzan’s American record from last week (49.24).
Gabi Albiero of Louisville is second, just barely a tenth ahead of Kylee Alons and Tristen Ulett.

Spare a thought for Dalton Lowe, who went 45.91 and missed the A final. It’s an event with some serious speed, led by Virginia Tech’s Antani Ivanov in 45.03. The meet record holder, Youssef Ramadan, is lurking in fourth. A former champ in Nick Albiero of Louisville is third. Nyls Kostanje is second. It should be a grandstand final.

Women’s 200 freestyle
Alex Walsh leads the way in the 200 free for Virginia, clocking in at 1:44.54 in prelims. It’s a tight field headed to finals. Sarah Foley of Duke continued her strong meet by going 1:45.17, .02 ahead of Reilly Tiltmann of Virginia. The top seed entering the morning, Louisville’s Paige Hetrick, eased into the final in fourth in 1:45.35, while Virginia Tech’s Emma Atkinson and NC State’s Abbey Webb tied for fifth in 1:45.60.
Men’s 200 freestyle
Ah, just five A finalists for NC State and six of the top nine. Ho hum.
That’s the way NC State’s depth is, with Bartosz Piszczorowicz leading the way in 1:33.23. Teammate Lukas Miller, who entered as the top seed, went 1:33.73 for fourth, followed in order by Samuel Hoover, Noah Bowers and Hunter Tapp. The only interlopers in the NC State party were Louisville’s Murilo Sartori (second in 1:33.39) and Georgia Tech’s Baturalp Ulu (third in 1:33.49).
