2021 NCAA Division I Women’s Championships: Hansson Leads Walsh in 200 Breaststroke
The 2021 NCAA Division I Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships continued with the final preliminary session of the meet on Saturday.
Saturday’s prelim events are the 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly and platform diving. The relays are all timed finals and will take place during the finals session. The 1,650 will also be a timed final and heats will start in the afternoon leading into the final.
Virginia leads the meet after winning five events, while NC State has won four and is in second place.
NCAA Championships: Women’s 200 Breaststroke
Indiana’s Lilly King won the past four NCAA titles in the event with the all-time fastest performance of 2:02.60 set in 2018. Texas A&M’s Bethany Galat finished second to King that same year with the second-fastest time in history at 2:03.26. The Aggies have four of the top 10 all-time performers with Galat, Sydney Pickrem, Breeja Larson and Anna Belousova. … USC’s Rebecca Soni is the other swimmer to claim four titles in the event, while Tara Kirk, Kristy Kowal and Kristine Quance each won three. … Stanford and USC have each won seven.
NC State’s Sophie Hansson is looking to build on winning the 100 breaststroke on Friday. She took Saturday’s top seed in 2:05.56.
Virginia landed three in the top eight, led by freshman Alex Walsh in second 2:05.64 and sophomore Ella Nelson with the third seed (2:05.80). Junior Alexis Wenger took the sixth seed (2:06.65).
Tennessee freshman Mona McSharry snagged the fourth seed in 2:06.37, ahead of Georgia sophomore Zoie Hartman (2:06.42).
NC State junior Andrea Podmanikova took the seventh seed (2:06.67), followed by Indiana junior Noelle Peplowski (2:06.71).
