2021 NCAA Division I Women’s Championships: Virginia’s Alex Walsh Top Seed in 200 IM
The 2021 NCAA Division I Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships continue with the first preliminary session of the meet.
The events on tap for the morning are prelims for the 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free and 1-meter diving. Relays are all timed finals and will take place during the finals sessions.
Virginia leads the meet after winning the 800 free relay on opening night of the NCAA Championships.
NCAA Championships: 200 IM Prelims
The fastest performer in history was Stanford’s Ella Eastin, who swam a 1:50.67 in 2018, the latest of 10 Stanford champions in history in the event. The last champion was Wisconsin’s Beata Nelson in 2019, who finished second-fastest in history at 1:50.79. Third-fastest time in history is Virginia’s Kate Douglass, whose best time is 1:50.92, set in 2020.
Virginia’s Alex Walsh build a lead in the breaststroke leg of the event to hold off the field.
She touched the wall in 1:54.62 to take the top seed into tonight’s final.
Cal’s Alicia Wilson took the second seed in 1:54.97, the only other swimmer to break 1:55 during the heats.
Virginia made it a 1-3 finish as Ella Nelson took the third seed in 1:55.00.
Georgia’s Zoie Hartman took the fourth seed in 1:55.03, ahead of Texas’ Kelly Pash (1:55.55), Wisconsin’s Phoebe Bacon (1:55.58), NC State’s Julia Poole (1:55.70) and Ohio State’s Kristen Romano (1:56.12).
