The 2021 NCAA Division I Men’s Swimming and Diving Championship continued Friday with preliminaries on Day 3 of the meet.
The events scheduled are the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 free, 100 breaststroke and 100 backstroke.
Cal has the lead heading into the day, but a late surge from Texas on Thursday night has the meet extremely close with every swim counting for both teams.

NCAA Championships: 400 IM
The fastest performer in history in this event is Georgia’s Chase Kalisz, who swam a 3:33.42 in 2017. Texas’ Carson Foster is second at 3:35.27 heading into the meet with his time from 2020. Stanford’s Abrahm DeVine won the past two titles in the event with a best time of 3:35.29. Cal’s Hugo Gonzalez comes in at No. 4 in the event all time with a 3:35.76, set in 2018. … USC has the most titles in the event with 12, while Michigan has 10 and Stanford has seven. USC’s David Wharton won the event four times, the lone simmer to do so, while Brian Goodell, Gary Hall, Ricardo Prado, Tim Sciciliano and Kalisz each won the even three times. … Olympic gold medalists Tom Dolan, Ryan Lochte and Tyler Clary each won the event twice.
Carson Foster was off to a fast start in the event, breaking the pool record with a 3:37.79. It is a couple of seconds off his seed time, but leaves room and energy for a big swim in the finals.
Cal senior Sean Grieshop also broke the pool record, taking the second seed in 3:38.68, ahead of Florida junior Bobby Finke (3:39.58).
But Texas loaded the finals with sophomore Jake Foster taking the fourth seed in 3:39.69 and junior Braden Vines taking the fifth seed in 3:40.18 and freshman David Johnston sneaking in to the final with the eighth seed at 3:40.80.
Arizona sophomore David Schlicht took the sixth seed (3:40.21), followed by Georgia sophomore Ian Grum (3:40.64).
