NCAA Championships: 200 IM
Florida’s Caeleb Dressel holds the NCAA and American record in the 200 individual medley at 1:38.13, set in 2019. Cal’s Andrew Seliskar was just one hundredth off of that mark a year later. Current Texas A&M swimmer Shaine Casas has the third-fastest time in 1:38.95, set in 2020. Stanford holds the most titles in the event with 11, followed by Florida with nine and USC with eight. Seliskar won in 2019, breaking a Florida streak that saw Mark Szaranek win in 2017, tied with Texas’ Will Licon, then Jan Switkowski win in 2018.
The Cal and Texas showdown will be in full force in the 200 IM with several swimmers from both schools making it back to the top 16.
Cal took two of the top three seeds in the event as freshman Destin Lasco took the top spot in 1:40.61.
Texas A&M’s Shaine Casas took the second seed in 1:40.74, ahead of Cal junior Hugo Gonzalez (1:40.94).
All three broke the previous pool record set by Georgia Tech’s Caio Pumputis (1:41.28), who tied for the fourth seed Thursday with a 1:41.34, same as Texas freshman Carson Foster (1:41.34).
Georgia’s Javier Acevedo took the sixth seed in 1:41.72, followed by Arizona sophomore David Schlicht (1:42.21) and Missouri junior Danny Kovac (1:42.21), who each tied for the seventh seed.
It should be an extremely fast final.
