2021 ACC Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships Day Four Finals Live: Madden Nails 15:45 1650, UVA Wins Team Title
2021 ACC Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships
Greensboro, Day Four Finals
The University of Virginia won its 12th ACC title since 2008 as the Cavaliers won the 1650, 100 free, 200 fly and 400 free relay on the final night in Greensboro, North Carolina as the focus now shifts to the NCAA championships in four weeks. NC State finished in second, who won the two ACC titles in 2017 and 2019 that Virginia did not win, and Louisville finished in third.
NC State won the 200 breast and 200 back on the final night as they are in line for a top four finish for the first time in school history in four weeks from now.

Virginia’s Paige Madden was long and strong for the entire 1650 freestyle as she won going away with a 15:45.45 in a 1-3 finish with fellow Cavalier Maddie Donohoe (16:10.32).
Madden’s time puts her with the number one time in the nation this season, surpassing Tennessee’s Kristen Stege from earlier tonight at SECs with her 15:47. Madden now has the top time nationally in three individual events as she will be a huge asset for the Cavaliers moving forward and a big reason why the school has risen so much in the last few years. Virginia now has the nation’s top time in every freestyle event this season.
A total of four freshmen scored in the top eight as Louisville’s Liberty Williams slipped in to second from an earlier heat with a 16:06.56 for the runner-up spot. Virginia Tech’s Chase Travis (16:14.41), NC State’s Yara Hierath (16:18.21) and Pittsburgh’s Abigail Grottle (16:28.67) also scored in the top eight as Madden was the only senior in the top eight.
Notre Dame’s Madeline Laporte (16:19.02) and Samantha Eyolfson (16:28.80) also scored in the top eight as juniors.

200 Back
NC State’s Emma Muzzy used a great last 50 to win her third straight conference title in the 200 back with a 1:50.12, coming home in a 27.89 on the final 50. The top four were deadlocked trough 150 before Muzzy took off on the last turn, winning by nearly a full second over NC State’s Katharine Berkoff (1:51.06). The time for Muzzy is now third nationally with her swim tonight as Alabama’s Rhyan White was a 1:48 earlier tonight at SECs.
Virginia’s Alex Walsh finished in third at 1:51.12 while Virginia Tech’s Emma Atkinson (1:51.64) was fourth as both of those swimmers are freshmen. In fact, the only senior in the final was NC State’s Kate Moore (1:54.50), who placed seventh overall as there were four freshmen in the A-final, including Virginia’s Reilly Tiltmann (1:52.53) and Louisville’s Tatiana Salcutan (1:54.04).

100 Free
Virginia’s Kate Douglass won her second individual ACC title of the weekend with a 46.83 in the 100 freestyle, lowering her season best of 46.86 from earlier in December as she won handily ahead of NC State’s Kylee Alons (47.73). Douglass was also nearly a second faster than Morgan Scott’s winning time at SECs earlier tonight at 47.5.
It appears Douglass may choose to swim the 100 free in four weeks at NCAAs over the 200 breast, due to Virginia’s depth in that event, and will focus on the 200 IM, 100 fly and 100 free as her three individual events. However, we will see when the psych sheets are released.
Virginia Tech’s Sarah Shackelford finished in third at 48.42, as Virginia’s Lexi Cuomo (48.52) and Kyla Valls (49.37) also score in the A-Final.

200 Breast
Having a knack for getting her hand on the wall first in dramatic fashion, Sophie Hansson won relatively comfortably in the 200 breast final on the last night of the 2021 ACC Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships with a 2:04.87. That swim puts her second nationally with four weeks to go until NCAAs in this same pool in Greensboro as she is behind Virginia’s Douglass, who may end up racing the 100 free instead of the 200 breast. Last season, Hansson had the top times in the 100 and 200 breaststroke heading into NCAAs before the meet was cancelled.
This is also Hansson’s sixth individual ACC title as she has won the 100 and 200 breast each of the last three years at ACCs, and will have a chance to win a clean sweep next season. Hansson went 1-2 with Wolfpack teammate Andrea Podmanikova (2:05.86) as Virginia’s Ella Nelson was third at 2:05.91, as the latter two sit fifth and sixth nationally at this point, behind Georgia’s Zoie Hartman who went 2:05.0 earlier tonight at SECs.
Virginia piled on the points with Anna Keating (2:07.52) and Alexis Wenger (2:08.93) also scoring in fourth and seventh place. NC State actually held half the lanes in the final as Abby Arens (2:07.56) and Julia Poole (2:07.73) placed fifth and sixth in addition to Hansson’s 1-2 with Podmanikova.
Duke freshman Sarah Foley was the lone non NC State/Virginia swimmer in the final as she was eighth at 2:10.28.
