The 2020 Olympic Trials dates were announced as the meet will start June 21-28, 2020 in Omaha, Nebraska.

The 2020 Olympic Trials will serve as the selection meet for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. The first day of the Olympic Trials will be five weeks before the first day of swimming at the Olympic Games, which will be a quicker turnaround than the six week gap between the 2016 Trials and Olympics in Rio.

This quick turnaround will be nothing new for the Team USA swimmers who will go on to compete at the Olympics in Tokyo. In 2012, the Olympic Trials were held five weeks ahead of the London Olympics while the 2008 Trials were held six weeks before the Beijing Olympics.

The 2020 Olympic Trials will see the debut of the men’s 800 and women’s 1500 freestyle events as they were added to the Olympic schedule for the first time by the IOC.

Each of the cut times announced were faster than the 2016 cuts, however, only 12 of the 26 previously contested events improved by more than one second. The most significant drop was the men’s 1500 free, which shifted from a 2016 qualifying time of 15:49.99 to a 15:44.89. On the women’s side, the women’s 400 IM saw the biggest drop with a new qualifying time of 4:51.79 over 2016’s 4:54.99.
