2020 Horizon League Swimming and Diving Championships
Rochester, Michigan
The concluding day of the 2020 Horizon League Swimming and Diving Championships took place today at the Oakland Aquatics Center in Rochester, Michigan. The events contested included the 1650 free, 200 back, 200 breast, 100 free, 200 fly, and 400 free relay.
Oakland University won both the men’s and women’s team championships for the seventh time in a row, winning by a handsome margin. Cleveland State was the second place team on both the men’s and women’s sides.

Women’s 1650 Free
Oakland University’s Emily Aycock took home the victory in the 1650 freestyle, winning in a time of 16:53.37. Finishing in second place was IUPUI’s Meagan Ronci, who touched the wall at 17:01.41. Oakland’s Sonya Zubenko took third place in a time of 17:04.27. Cleveland’s Lexie Kostelnik finished in fourth place (17:06.11), followed by Ashton Amerman of UIC (17:12.39), and Maggie Held of Oakland (17:18.04). Rachel Contich (17:20.53) of Cleveland and Josie Preski (17:28.64) of Youngstown rounded out the top eight swimmers.
Men’s 1650 Free
Hunter Crook of UIC took first place honours, as he won with a time of 15:26.95. He was followed to the wall by Oakland’s Ben Davis who swam a time of 15:27.19, while Luke Hutchinson of UIC came in third (15:31.78).
Green Bay’s Xabier Carneiro Viqueria finished fourth with a time of 15:46.26, Oakland’s Andrew Bernsdorf finished fifth (15:51.55), Milwaukee’s Jack Garcia finished sixth (15:56.28). Green Bay’s Daniel Frederick finished seventh (15:57.43), and Nicholas Dibley of IUPUI finished eighth (16:00.81).
Women’s 200 Back
Oakland University nabbed the top two spots with Susan LaGrand finishing on top with a time of 1:56.58. Her teammate Grace Shinske added to her two titles yesterday, swimming a time of 1:57.17 to take second place. IUPUI’s Lauren Thompson finished in third at 1:58.87. Milwaukee’s Giulia Guerra Montes took fourth place (2:02.03), while Rachel Boodt of Oakland finished close behind for fifth (2:02.23). Agnes Bahr of Cleveland finished in sixth position (2:02.89), while her teammate Sule Van Der Merwe took seventh place (2:04.17) and Eline Van den Bossche of IUPUI finished eighth (2:04.64).
Men’s 200 Back
Oakland University’s Marko Khotynetskyi took home the title with a time of 1:43.12. Finishing close behind was Cleveland State’s Dominik Niedzialek with a time of 1:43.19. Oakland’s William Gayne finished in third place at 1:44.74. Cleveland’s Timmy Kubacki took fourth place at 1:45.06, IUPUI’s Nick Hanas came fifth at 1:46.00, UIC’s Daniel Sivak came sixth at 1:46.12. Oakland’s Will Barton finished in seventh (1:47.70) and Jason Harary of IUPUI finished in eighth place (1:49.95).
Women’s 100 Free
Katie Colwell of Oakland University took home top honours with a time of 49.99. Finishing with runner-up honours was Anna Liu of Green Bay (50.77), while IUPUI’s Maggie Hatfield finished third at 51.06. Gabriella Marinelli of Cleveland State finished in fourth place in a time of 51.13, with Oakland’s Karlee Marsh close behind for fifth (51.23). UIC’s Poleena Kovalaske finished sixth in a time of 51.57, while Cleveland’s Irena Weclawiak came seventh at 51.79. Casey Prentice of Youngstown rounded out the championship final at 52.34.
Men’s 100 Free
Oakland University’s Christian Bart clinched the win with a time of 43.76. Finishing in second place was Benjamin Redman of Green Bay in a time of 44.15. Dominic Poletta of Cleveland finished third at 44.40, while Mack Flowers of Oakland took fourth at 44.41. Oakland’s Rudy Aguilar-Fernandez finished fifth in a time of 44.87, while IUPUI’s Jackson Sandala finished sixth in a time of 45.13. Milwaukee’s Danny Larson (45.19) and UIC’s Josh Dellorto (45.39) rounded out the championship final.
Women’s 200 Breast
Oakland University junior Sydney McDowell made a clean sweep of the breaststroke events, winning the event in a time of 2:12.77. Oakland dominated this event, with the top four spots of the podium all Grizzlies. Taylor Bailey finished second in 1:13.59, Kiera Brough took third place in 2:16.12, and Erin Donagan finished in fourth at 2:17.88. Finishing in fifth place was Cleveland’s Libby Smith in a time of 2:19.90. Sixth place went to Tiphaine Saint Gilles of Youngstown at 2:21.11, while Cleveland’s Alana Cartwright came seventh (2:21.19). Rounding out the top eight was IUPUI’s Aubrey Wing (2:21.46).
Men’s 200 Breast
Green Bay’s Maxwell Boehnlein took top honours with a time of 1:58.01. Oakland’s Ryan Geheb finished in second place at 1:58.77, meanwhile Cleveland’s Jack Krusinski took third place at 1:59.06. Oakland teammates Michael VanCoppenolle (2:00.87) and Tarek Aboelenin (2:01.51) finished fourth and fifth respectively. IUPUI’s Sam Hahs (2:01.68), Cleveland’s Tyler Stevenson (2:03.76), Green Bay’s Garrett Spencer (2:06.10) rounded out the championship final.
Women’s 200 Fly
Lilly Culp swimming for UIC won the 200 fly by almost two seconds over her nearest rival in a time of 2:00.58. Sohvi Nenonen of Oakland finished in second place with a time of 2:02.37, while Milwaukee’s Bella Passamani touched third at 2:04.65. IUPUI’s Maureen Lingle took fourth place (2:04.77) and Green Bay’s Kate Vanderhoef (2:04.85) finished fifth. Mady Cislo of Oakland (2:05.22) came sixth, meanwhile Stephanie Sipple of Cleveland came seventh (2:05.80) and Allison Walker of IUPUI finished eighth (2:06.09).
Men’s 200 Fly
Luke Hutchinson took home the victory for UIC with a time of 1:46.37. Riley Darling of Green Bay finished second in a time of 1:47.64. Oakland’s Danylo Hrebelnyi came third at 1:48.12, while teammate Ian Allen finished fourth at 1:48.18. Cleveland’s Matthew Martin came fifth (1:48.23) and Milwaukee’s Patrick Kelley came sixth (1:48.51). IUPUI’s Mark Auger finished in seventh place (1:48.60) and UIC’s Kyle Lewarchick finished eighth (1:50.18).
Men’s 3M Diving
Felix Lafortune of UIC took home the title scoring 358.10. In second place was Patrick Tener of IUPUI who scored 354.10. Milwaukee’s Jared Kleczka finished third with a score of 332.60, while Cleveland’s Matthew Akers finished fourth (310.80). Andrew Lewarchick of UIC finished in fifth place with a score of 304.80.
Women’s 400 Free Relay
Oakland University won the relay handily with their team of Susan LaGrand, Grace Shinske, Sohvi Nenonen and Katie Colwell finishing in a time of 3:20.42. Finishing in second place was the team from IUPUI (3:23.99). Cleveland State came in third in a time of 3:25.09.
Men’s 400 Free Relay
Marko Khotynetskyi, Mack Flowers, Rudy Aguilar-Fernandez and Christian Bart took top honours for Oakland University in a time of 2:56.29. Cleveland State finished in second place with a time of 2:57.00. In third place was IUPUI’s team in a time of 2:58.77.
