Michigan’s Charlie Swanson won his fourth straight 400 IM title on Friday night as he became the first man to sweep the 400 IM at Big Ten’s since fellow Wolverine Tim Siciliano won from 1999 – 2002. Michigan also got a win from senior Miles Smachlo in the 100 butterfly.

200 Free
Ohio State senior Andrew Loy won his second race of the weekend at the Big Ten men’s swimming and diving championships as he won the 200 free with a 1:31.88 on Friday night in Bloomington, Indiana. Loy went 1-2 with fellow Buckeye Paul DeLakis (1:32.04) as they went 1-2 in the 200 IM last night in the same order. Loy won Ohio State’s first 200 free Big Ten title since Josh Fleagle won in 2015.
Michigan had three swimmers in the A-Final as Felix Auböck (1:33.03) finished in fourth just behind Indiana’s Mohamed Samy (1:32.91). The Hoosiers had won the last four Big Ten titles in this event but that streak was snapped.
Michigan’s Patrick Callan (1:33.04) and Gus Borges (1:35.01) finished in fifth and seventh respectively. Michigan State’s Aidan Farley (1:35.88) also swam in the championship final for the Spartans.

100 Breast
Minnesota sophomore Max McHugh just barely missed the Big Ten meet record in the 100 breast final as he swam a 50.67 to win on Friday night at the Big Ten men’s swimming and diving championships. McHugh missed Ian Finnerty’s 50.60 record that he set last season as the Gopher sophomore won ahead of Indiana sophomore Zane Backes (51.37) as those guys will have fun battles the next two years.
McHugh won Minnesota’s first 100 breast Big Ten title since Colin Lee-To won in 2009. McHugh’s time is also the fastest time in Division I with 26 days to go until NCAAs in Indianapolis.
The Hoosiers had won seven of the last nine Big Ten titles in the 100 breaststroke as Backes could not keep that tradition going.
Michigan’s Jeremy Babinet (51.44) finished in third with Ohio State’s Jason Mathews (52.04) coming in fourth.
Purdue’s Trent Pellini (52.20), Ohio State’s Hudson McDaniel (52.40), Wisconsin’s Jian Mao (52.43) and Michigan’s William Chan (53.48) also swam in the championship final.

Indiana’s Gabriel Fantoni won his third straight 100 backstroke Big Ten title in his home pool with a 44.92 as he narrowly missed the meet record of 44.65 set by Shane Ryan in 2017. Fantoni has now won this event every year of his career for the Hoosiers as he went 1-2 with freshman Brendan Burns (45.75), who was third earlier in the night in the 100 butterfly.
Michigan had no swimmers in the A-Final as their arch rival Ohio State placed Jonah Cooper (46.16) and Colin McDermott (46.25) in fourth and fifth.
Wisconsin’s Cameron Tysoe had a good swim to finish third at 46.03.
Indiana’s Jacob Steele (46.41), Northwestern’s Ryan Gridley (46.90) and Wisconsin’s Wesley Jekel (48.00) also swam in the championship final.
