Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships

Morgantown, West Virginia 2020

The 2020 Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships continue from the campus of West Virginia University with the finals of the 100 fly, 400 IM, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back, 3m diving and 200 free relay.

The Texas men swept every event in the pool as junior Alvin Jiang had two impressive wins in the 100 fly and 100 back.

Kansas was able to celebrate a champion on Friday night as Kate Steward won the 100 breaststroke and Chen Jiayu won the 3m diving event.

Women’s 100 Fly

Texas junior Emily Reese started the night off with a win in the 100 butterfly at the Big 12 swimming and diving championships with a 53.49 as she finished ahead of Kansas’ Greta Olsen (53.90) and West Virginia’s Morgan Bullock (53.92). It looked like it could be a non-Texas win for the first time at these championships but top seed from this morning Elizabeth Amato-Hanner (54.21) finished in fifth.

Women’s 400 IM

Evie Pfeifer won her second title of the Big 12 swimming and diving championships as she won the 400 IM with a 4:06.47 on Friday night in Morgantown, West Virginia. That’s a season best time for her and puts her 15th in Division I with 19 days to go until NCAAs. Freshman Kelly Pash (4:07.71) finished in second as that was also a season best for her.

Texas freshmen nearly went 1-2-3 in the 200 freestyle as Bridget Semenuk (1:45.66) led the way ahead of Kyla Leibel (1:46.85). But Kansas senior Jenny Nusbaum (1:47.35) out-touched Miranda Heckman (1:47.67) to deny the Longhorns the sweep. They also had a freshman Mary Smutny (1:49.34) place sixth.

Texas sophomores swept the top three spots in the men’s 200 free with Drew Kibler leading the way at 1:33.66 as he cruised ahead of noted sprinters Daniel Krueger (1:34.58) and Matthew Willenbring (1:35.32). All three of those guys swam on the same team at the 2017 World Juniors for the United States.

Women’s 100 Breast

Kansas was able to celebrate a win on Friday night at the Big 12 swimming and diving championships as Kate Steward (1:00.34) broke up the Texas party to win the 100 breaststroke. Steward came into the meet as the top seed and we highlighted this race as an opportunity for a non-Texas swimmer to come out on top. Iowa State’s Lehr Thorson (1:01.02) finished in second and Texas’ Kennedy Lohman (1:01.18) was third.

Men’s 100 Breast

Freshmen swept the top two spots in the men’s 100 breast with Texas’ Caspar Corbeau winning at 52.55 while TCU’s Vitauts Silins (52.83) was second. Corbeau was already a 51.4 earlier this season so he should factor into the national title race in 26 days.

Women’s 100 Back

Senior Claire Adams added slightly from her relay time last night when she was a 50.5 in the 400 medley relay as she won the individual 100 back final with a 51.10. Adams was a 50.6 this morning which put her fourth in the nation as she still had a solid time, finishing 1-2 with teammate Julia Cook (51.76). Cook was just off the 51.6 she swam at the Minnesota Invite.

Alvin Jiang won his second title of the night at the Big 12 swimming and diving championships with a 44.95 in the 100 back after he upset teammate Maxime Rooney in the 100 fly earlier. Jiang got the better of Austin Katz (45.85), who should be strong in tomorrow’s 200. West Virginia’s Hunter Armstrong (46.22) finished in third place.

Texas won the 200 free relay at 1:28.92, a half second off their mid-season best. Bridget Semenuk (22.58), Julia Cook (21.90), Claire Adams (22.06) and Kyla Leibel (22.38) won for the Longhorns as they are currently 15th in Division I with 19 days until NCAAs.
