2020 ACC Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships Day 4 Prelims: UVA, NC State Vie for Crown
Virginia put itself in position to reclaim the ACC Championship Saturday night, placing 11 swimmers in A finals on the final day of the four-day meet. UVA enters finals, which comprises six swimming events and platform diving, with a lead of 113 points over NC State.

It’s an ACC Championships team-title battleground right out the gate, with eight of the top nine spots owned by the two contenders. NC State garnered the top two seeds, with Emma Muzzy nearly matching her seed time to take the top spot in 1:51.92, ahead of 100 back champ Katharine Berkoff. They’re followed by two UVA swimmers, Megan Moroney third and Emma Seiberlich fourth. NC State’s Danika Huizinga (fifth) and Mackenzie Glover (eighth) and UVA’s Erin Earley (sixth) and Marcella Maguire (ninth) will also factor in.

Louisville’s Casey Fanz is the top seed and the only one to crack 48 seconds in 47.94. But the big guns loom behind. Morgan Hill, the top seed, coasted to fourth in 48.12. NC State’s Kylee Alons and Alyssa Marsh of Duke are tied as the second seed. NC State’s Ky-lee Perry missed the A final, settling for ninth.

It’s like a broken record: UVA 1-2, NC State 3-4, three from each school in the A final. Sophie Hansson is the third seed as the Wolfpack sophomore seeks to repeat her breaststroke double from last year, and 100 breast runner-up Alexis Wenger of UVA is sixth. Fellow cavalier Margaret Nelson claimed the top seed in prelims in 2:07.23. The top seed entering the meet, Kate Douglass, is second, trailed by Hansson and NC State teammate Julia Poole.

Abigail Richter gives Virginia another top seed and a chance to pile the points for an ACC championship in an event where NC State has just one B finalist. Richter clocked in at 1:54.69 with Notre Dame’s Coleen Gilligan second. UVA also pushed Jessica Nava (fourth) and Julia Menkhaus (eighth) into the championship final.

Also Saturday night is the 1,650 free, where Paige Madden is the top seed among 1,650 times (1,000 free times are also factored in). Kathleen Moore and Makayla Sargent of NC State and UVA’s Madelyn Donohoe comprise the top four. UVA could sneak some points via diving, with Sydney Dusel have scored in the one- and three-meter springboards. Jenn Bell and Jocelyn Porter have also scored points for the Cavaliers on the boards. UVA holds the top seed in the 400 free relay (3:12.30), with NC State and UNC third, all in NCAA A cuts.
