2020 ACC Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships Day 2 Finals: Douglass goes 1:51 in 200 IM (RACE VIDEO)
The prelims were just an appetizer for Kate Douglass. After setting an ACC Championships record in the 200 individual medley Thursday morning, the fab freshman won the finals at night in 1:51.36. It’s quicker than the time used by Ella Eastin to win NCAAs in 2016 (1:51.65), incorrectly listed as the NCAA record on the ACC’s program, but still behind the American record Stanford’s Eastin set in 2018 (1:50.67).

500 freestyle
Paige Madden defended the top seed in the 500 free with aplomb, trimming nearly five seconds from prelims to win in 4:36.19. UVA was denied the 1-2 finish, though, with Maddie Donohoe slipping to third in 4:42.05 (still faster than prelims) thanks to a stellar swim from Kathleen Moore of NC State in 4:39.54. Fourth was Makayla Sargent of NC State. She was ahead of Donohoe at the 400-yard wall, but Donohoe split a 56.06 on the last 100 to get the win. Sargent came back in 57.14.

200 individual medley
Douglass was the story, winning in 1:51.36. It’s faster than the time Eastin used to win NCAAs in 2016 (1:51.65) but not faster than her American record in 2018 (1:50.65). Douglass’ swim is an ACC record (dashing her 1:52.84 from November) and breaks Missy Franklin’s Greensboro Aquatic Center pool mark from 2015 (1:52.11). Her crazy fast splits are below, and she had the fastest split in the race in each 50, including one of only two sub-25 fly splits at 23.81 and the only sub-28 back split (27.24).
Julia Poole of NC State crept up two spots to second in 1:54.86. That was vital in the team scoring since Virginia took third and fourth via Abigail Richter and Margaret Nelson, respectively.

50 freestyle
A year ago, Virginia’s Morgan Hill beat NC State’s Ky-lee Perry by .01 for the ACC Championship. This year, Hill bested Perry by .02. But thanks to Perry’s teammate, it meant Hill settled for silver.
Kylee Alons spoiled the party, the NC State sprinter attaining an A cut and a gold medal in 21.63 seconds, .22 faster than she was in earning the second seed from prelims. Hill was second in 21.76 (she won in 21.68 last year), with Perry third (21.78). The top seed from the morning, Duke’s Alyssa Marsh, slid to eighth in 22.30 (after a 21.78 prelims swim).

Douglass had to choose between racing as the top seed in the 50 free and the 200 IM. She chose well, but still managed a 21.75 off the front of the 200 free relay to lead Virginia to the win by three-quarters of a second. Cuomo, Kyla Valls and Hill (with the fastest split of the event in 21.24) rounded out the squad.
Second was Louisville, thanks in part to Casey Fanz going 21.50 in the second leg, in 1:27.44. The Cardinals, third-placed NC State (1:27.50) and fourth-place North Carolina (1:28.37) all picked up NCAA A cuts.
