2020 ACC Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships Day 1: UVA makes opening salvo
The ACC Championships look likely to come down to a battle between Virginia and NC State, the latter having won two of the last three conference titles. If the opening 200 medley relay is any indication, it could be a close battle.
ACC Championships, Greensboro Aquatic Center
200 Medley Relay
Morgan Hill edged out Ky-Lee Perry on the anchor leg to drag Virginia past NC State in a meet- and conference-record time of 1:34.27, edging the Wolfpack by .09 seconds. It’s also a Greensboro Aquatic Center record.
UVA took the lead through Caroline Gmelich in backstroke, but they had to play catch-up after Alexis Wenger’s breaststroke leg. Kate Douglass was up to the task to get the Cavaliers close, and Hill sealed the job, splitting 21.28 on the anchor to the 21.48 by Perry.
The time undercuts the 2017 championship squad from NC State (1:34.89) and is quicker than the time posted by NC State’s 2019 foursome that was the conference record (1:34.52). NC State’s foursome of Katharine Berkoff, Sophie Hansson, Sirena Rowe and Perry finished in 1:34.38, a program record.
Louisville snuck past Duke to third place in 1:35.87 on the power of Casey Franz’s 21.15 free split for an A cut. Ashlyn Schoof, Maria Astashkina and Grace Oglesby comprised the Cardinals’ squad. Duke (Emma Shuppert, Halle Morris, Alyssa Marsh and Sarah Snyder) was fourth in an A cut, the school’s first this season, and a school record.

800 Freestyle relay
After the drama of the opening relay, Virginia led wire-to-wire over NC State in the 800 free relay, the squad of Kyla Valls, Paige Madden, Margaret Nelson and Megan Moroney winning in 6:55.66. Both of the top two teams attained A cuts for NCAAs. Padden had the fastest split of the race in 1:42.66, swimming second for UVA to get the Cavaliers clean water. It’s UVA’s 13th straight title in the event and the fourth-fastest time in school history.
NC State (Kathleen Moore, Kylee Alons, Katharine Berkoff and Julia Poole) were second in 6:59.73, which ties a program record set in 2017. Louisville was third.
