Fresh off finishing third in the 500 free, Notre Dame’s Jack Hoagland grabbed the top seed in the 400 IM with a time of 4:43.45. He’s a tenth ahead of NC State’s Eric Knowles, and 200 IM champ Ted Schubert is third at 3:44.01 in what appears to be the clear top echelon from the morning.

Sam Schilling leads a balanced final heat in which the eight finalists are separated by just 1.3 seconds. Schilling set the pace at 1:33.42, with Louisville’s Colton Paulson second in 1:33.76 and Sadler McKeen of Notre Dame third in 1:33.90. One slight surprise is that both Zach Yeadon of Notre Dame (the 500 free champ) and Peter Varjasi of Florida State (who was third in the 100 free) missed the A final in 10th and 11th, respectively.

His biggest opposition on paper, Georgia Tech’s Caio Pumputis, was sixth in prelims at 52.90. The second seed goes to Keefer Barnum in 52.38 with a pair of UNC Swimmers, Valdas Abaliksta and Jacob Rauch in third and fourth, respectively.
