2020 ACC Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships Day 2 Finals: Schubert Claims Classic IM Battle
The 200 individual medley on Day 2 of the ACC Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships lived up to the hype. Five swimmers, 0.22 seconds separating them, all in B cuts that would’ve gotten to NCAAs last year.
At the end, Ted Schubert of Virginia ended up on top, his time of 1:43.09 (powered by a stellar final 50) edging Caio Pumputis to the wall by four one-hundredths of a second.
That was the highlight of a busy night. The event-by-event recaps:

500 freestyle
It was Zach Yeadon’s night, the Notre Dame junior becoming just the third Fightin’ Irish swimmer to win an ACC men’s championship. His time of 4:10.39 was an A Cut, the only A cut of the three individual events and his third of the season. The school record also broke Anton Ipsen’s pool record from 2018 (4:11.21) and was within a whisper of Matt McLean’s meet record (4:10.00).
“To be a part of history now, and for the team to get involved and be pumped up like that, it’s great. It’s a great motivator,” Yeadon said in a team statement. “And, after we finished, Jack Hoagland and I were both on the podium, and we were actually second in the meet at that point. So, it’s a great feeling to get everybody into the meet and really feel like we’re competing for something.”
Second was UVA’s John Walker in 4:11.93. Jack Hoagland placed third in 4:12.15, the second-fastest time in program history.

200 individual medley
The splits are worth parsing below. Schubert turned for freestyle in fourth place but used a torrid 24.80 final 50 to get to the wall first, with Pumputis of Georgia Tech second in 1:43.13. Schubert’s time is a Virginia record and the seventh-fastest time in the nation.
The guy first at the 150-yard wall was top seed Evgenii Somov, who faded to fourth in 1:43.24. Third was Erge Gezmis in 1:43.19, a staggering seven seconds faster than his entry time and the third-fatest in NC State history. Somov’s Louisville teammate Daniel Sos touched fifth in 1:43.27.

Nyls Korstanje wasn’t as fast as prelims, but he finished first in 19.25 seconds, the fifth time in six years NC State has won the event at the ACC men’s championships. Second was Louisville freshman Haridi Sameh in 19.31, the third-fastest in school history. Peter Varjasi of Florida State finished third. Top seed Blaise Vera of Pitt slid to sixth. Ryan Baker of Virginia was fourth in a school-record 19.42.
It took 19.49 to win the B final via Augustus Lamb of UVA and 19.53 to win the C final thanks to UNC’s Will Messenger. Duke’s Miles Williams, who finished 10th in 19.54, set a school record.

Florida State placed four swimmers in the top 12 of the 50 and put the strength to good use by winning the 200 free relay. Varjasi, Griffin Alaniz, Jakub Ksiazek and Max McCusker clocked in at 1:16.69. The Seminoles were second at the final handoff, but McCusker, who wasn’t in the individual 50, roared back with an 18.93 anchor leg to catch Louisville (1:16.94).
McCusker’s was the second-fastest leg of the event, trailing only the 18.83 thrown down by Thomas Hallock of Virginia Tech as the Hokies finished fourth. Third was NC State, with Korstanje leading the team with a 19.19 out front.
