2019 World University Games Day 2 Prelims: Live Recap

The 2019 World University Games opened its second day of swimming competition from Naples, Italy on Friday.

After a few meet records fell on the first day, swimmers looked to keep the momentum rolling with some fast swimming on Day 2.

The day started with the men’s 200 free, followed by the women’s 100 breast, men’s 200 IM, women’s 100 free and the men’s 1500 free.

Men’s 200 Free

Russia’s Aleksandr Fedorov cruised to the top seed in the 200 free, finishing in 1:48.70.

Americans Robert Freeman III (1:49.03) and Zach Apple (1:49.07) took the second and third seeds, respectively.

South Korea’s Jaehoon Yang took the fourth spot in today’s semifinal in 1:49.08, followed by Russia’s Nikolay Snegirev (1:49.23), Italy’s Matteo Ciampi (1:49.57), France’s Remi Meresse (1:49.77) and Poland’s Filip Zaborowski (1:49.78).

Women’s 100 Breast

South Africa’s Tatjana Shoemaker claimed the top seed in the 100 breast, going a 1:07.12.

She was one of two swimmers to break 1:08 in the field as Australia’s Chelsea Hodges finished in 1:07.85 to take the second seed for the semifinals.

Japan’s Kanako Watanabe took the third seed in 1:08.41, followed by Brazil’s Jhennifer Alves (1:08.62), Britain’s Sarah Vasey (1:08.64), American Emily Weiss (1:08.73), Russia’s Daria Chikunova (1:08.81), Japan’s Mai Fukasawa (1:08.88) and American Jorie Caneta (1:08.94).

Men’s 200 IM

Britain’s Joe Litchfield earned the top seed in the 200 IM, finishing his prelim head in 2:00.53.

Japan’s Tomoya Takeuchi took the second seed in 2:00.70 ahead of Italy’s Alberto Razzetti (2:00.86) to qualify for the semifinals.

Hungary’s Daniel Sos took the fourth seed in 2:01.06, followed by Maxim Stupin (2:01.11), Japan’s Juran Mizohata (2:01.13), Britain’s Mark Szaranek (2:01.13) and France’s Samy Helmbacher (2:01.15).

Women’s 100 Free

Germany’s Lisa Hopnik held off a pair of Americans to take the top seed in the 100 free. She finished in 55.07.

Gabby DeLoof took the second seed in 55.39, just ahead of compatriot Veronica Burchill (55.47).

Germany’s Jessica Felspar was fourth (55.70), followed by Russia’s Elizaveta Klevanovich (55.77), Australia’s Julia Hawkins (56.12), Japan’s Aki Nishizu (56.340) and South Africa’s Tayla Lovemore (56.32).
