2019 Women’s Big Ten Swimming & Diving Championships: Indiana Claims Championship Title on Night 4
The fourth and final night of competition at the 2019 Big Ten Swimming & Diving Championships saw the women of Indiana University usurp the University of Michigan, who have won the last three championship titles.
Lilly King continued her reign in the breaststroke events with a top showing in the 200 breast, while Wisconsin’s Beata Nelson posted a new B1G meet and pool record in the 200 back. Michigan’s Siobhan Haughey added her own B1G meet record in the 100 free.
Pool records also tumbled in the 1650 free, platform diving, and 400 free relay.

Women’s 1650 Free
Penn State’s Allyson McHugh delivered a new pool record in the women’s 1650 free with a time of 15:47.18. McHugh’s time downed Minnesota’s Ashley Steenvoorden pool record of 15:58.62, which was posted in 2011.
Molly Kowal of Ohio State grabbed a close second with a time of 15:49.53, while Indiana’s Cassandra Jernberg was third overall with a 15:57.25.
The Michigan duo of Yirong Bi and Sierra Schmidt grabbed fourth and fifth with times of 16:00.04 and 16:01.78.
Indiana’s Maggie Wallace (16:08.32), Minnesota’s Mackenzie Padington (16:10.54), and Michigan’s Rebecca Postoll (16:16.52) were sixth through eighth.

Women’s 200 Back
Beata Nelson of Wisconsin claimed victory and a new B1G meet record in the final of the women’s 200 back. Nelson turned in a final time of 1:48.47, downing her own record of 1:50.81 from the prelims session.
Minnesota’s Chantal Nack grabbed second overall with a time of. 1:51.42, followed by Rutgers’ Vera Koprivova and her time of 1:52.60.
Tevyn Waddell of Minnesota turned in a time of 1:53.68 for fourth, while Michigan’s Chloe Hicks took fifth with a 1:53.86.
Ohio State’s Kristen Romano (1:54.79), Rutgers’ Tereza Grusova (1:55.85), and Purdue’s Jacklyn Smailis (1:56.00) finished sixth through eighth.

Women’s 100 Free
The Michigan women produced dominating results in the women’s 100 free, sweeping first through third place and collecting an astonishing 87 points to push them a shy 45 points behind Indiana.
Senior Siobhan Haughey turned in a new B1G meet record of 47.06 to finish first, while fellow senior Catherine DeLoof grabbed second with a 47.52. Haughey’s time took down Ohio State’s Zhesi Li’s 2018 record of 47.43.
Sophomore Daria Pyshnenko added a third place finish of 48.53, followed closely by Indiana freshman Morgan Scott (48.84) and Wisconsin freshman Lillie Hosack (48.95).
Minnesota’s Zoe Avestruz (49.12), Ohio State’s Taylor Petrak (49.14), and Ohio State’s Freya Rayner (49.32) rounded out the top eight.

Indiana’s Lilly King continued her reign of the breaststroke events with a top showing in the 200 breast. King stopped the clock at a 2:05.14 for gold.
Miranda Tucker of Michigan posted a 2:07.64 for second, while Indiana’s Noelle Peplowski was third overall with a 2:07.75.
Fourth place went to Northwestern’s Calypso Sheridan (2:07.98) and fifth place was scooped up by Minnesota’s Lindsey Kozelsky (2:08.42).
Indiana’s Bailey Andison (2:08.84), Michigan’s Jamie Zhen Yeung (2:09.03), and Indiana’s Laura Morley (2:09.45) completed the top eight.

Women’s 200 Fly
Ohio State’s Kathrine Demler flew to victory in the women’s 200 fly, clocking a narrow victory over Michigan’s Vanessa Krause. Demler stopped the clock .05 seconds ahead of Krause, winning the event with a 1:55.23 over Krause’s 1:55.28.
Rutgers’ Francesca Stoppa turned in a 1:55.99 for third place, while Michigan’s Victoria Kwan picked up fourth place with a 1:57.17.
Madison Hart of Penn State finished fifth overall with a 1:57.43, just ahead of Indiana’s Shelby Koontz and her time of 1:57.54.
Nebraska’s Isabelle Murray (1:58.68) and Michigan’s Sierra Schmidt (1:58.96) took seventh and eighth.

Women’s Platform Diving
Indiana’s Jessicca Parratto posted a new pool record in the women’s platform diving event, turning in a total 394.40 points. The previous record was a 388.95 set in 2009 by Amy Korthauer.
Olivia Rosendahl of Northwestern finished second with a 364.40, followed by Purdue’s Emily Meaney’s 352.85.
Fourth place went to Nebraska’s Abigail Knapton (340.10), while Minnesota’s Kristen Hayden was fifth with 308.55.
Ohio State’s Lara Tarvitt and Lexie Barker completed the top eight with 305.35 and 292.10 points.

Women’s 400 Free Relay
The Michigan women ended the 2019 Big Ten Championships with a new B1G meet and pool record in the 400 free relay. The relay team of Margaret MacNeil (47.70), Catherine DeLoof (46.68), Daria Pyshnenko (48.81), and Siobhan Haughey (47.10) concluded the meet with a combined time of 3:10.29.
Wisconsin’s relay team grabbed a strong second place finish with a time of 3:13.80, while Indiana turned in a time of 3:14.32 for third.
Ohio State’s relay team grabbed fourth with a 3:14.72, followed by Minnesota’s 3:16.84.
Purdue (3:19.42), Iowa (3:19.72), and Penn State (3:20.69) rounded out the top eight.
