2019 TYR Pro Swim Series Bloomington: Nathan Adrian Makes Racing Return
The 2019 TYR Pro Swim Series in Bloomington headed into its second day of competition with a slew of the sport’s biggest names gracing the heat sheet. Nathan Adrian made his first appearance in the competition pool since going public with his testicular cancer in January, hitting the natatorium with an army of fans in attendance. The crowd-favorite was not alone in his immense presence on deck, as world record holder Lilly King sought to secure an easy first-place seed going into tonight’s finals. Katie Ledecky filled out the impressive Day 2 roster as one of the hottest names in swimming, while a men’s 100 free heat featured five men separated by four tenths of a second on the heat sheet.

It was a dual in the pool between current American record holder Simone Manuel and recent Louisville grad Mallory Comerford, as the two entered the event with three tenths of a second separating them. As two of the best sprinters in the world took their places behind the block, the crowd prepared for one of the most eagerly-awaited races of the meet.
At the first 50, however, there was no question. Manuel went out in a stellar 27.71, the only woman in the field under 28. With unmatched closing speed, Manuel surged into the wall, stopping the clock at 53.55 to beat Comerford (54.69) by over a second. Margo Greer put up a solid third-place time of 55.14 to reserve a middle lane in tonight’s final, while Allison Schmitt evaded the outside lanes herself with a time of 54.24.
Anika Apostalon will enter tonight’s final seeded fifth with a time of 55.53, as she edged out Taylor Ruck (55.57) in the race’s final lap after trailing by two tenths in the initial 50. Katie Ledecky showcased her sprinter talents with a 55.58 to take seventh, while Isabella Arcila and Kylee Alons will have to battle for the final lane after tying with a time of 55.89.

Men’s 100 Free
The men’s 100 free left nothing to be desired, as it lived up to the hype of being the most competitive event of the meet thus far. While this morning’s results are hardly a solid predictor of tonight’s final outcome, it is Robert Howard who will be gracing the middle lane with a 49.30 seed. Blake Pieroni will be at his hip, as he turned in a 49.37 to beat Ali Khalafalla (49.40). Indiana’s Zach Apple could take it all from the far lane, as his time of 49.41 will set him up for an upset two lanes over from Howard.
Nathan Adrian was met with a deafening roar as he took his place behind the blocks, as coaches and fellow athletes alike lined the pool. His 49.83 to secure the fifth seed was hardly as impressive as his perseverance in such a tumultuous time in his personal life. Adrian will make a reappearance tonight with a realistic shot at the victory.
Andrej Barna secured sixth seed with a time of 50.09, narrowly evading the end lane, as Coleman Stewart touched in at 50.20 to beat Mohamed Samy (50.31).

Ian Finnerty had to fight to break the top four, fending off Anton McKee’s 1:01.46 with a 1:01.26 of his own. Andrew Wilson was not to be ignored and will enter as a dark horse in tonight’s final with a 1:01.70 seed. Katie Drabot claimed her middle lane with ease, as she split a near-perfect race to clock in at 2:09.93. Just moments after an impressive 50 back, Regan Smith (2:10.32) re-stationed herself behind the block and put up an equally impressive 200 fly. It seemed as if Smith may let second seed slip through her fingers, however, as Sarah Gibson exhibited uncanny closing speed in her last 100. After trailing by nearly two seconds in the first half of the race, Gibson began to narrow the gap, touching in at 2:11.85 to take down Asia Seidt (2:12.51).
Seidt had a feat ahead of her in conquering Ella Eastin, who showcased her versatility with a 2:12.68 to break into the top five. Lillie Nordmann stayed on her hip, dropping a flat 2:13.00 to gain a healthy advantage over Remedy Rule (2:13.70). Gambardella shifted things into fifth gear to nab the smoother finish, stopping the clocks at 2:00.38 to trump Litherland’s 2:00.41. Seventeen-year-old Carson Foster played an equal part in the final 50 stroke race, clocking in just two-hundredths later with a 2:00.43.
Van Mathias and Miles Smachlo engaged in a similar battle to the wall. Mathias finished on a full stroke to seize fourth with a 2:01.17, edging out Smachlo’s 2:01.19. Jean-Pierre Khouzam stayed with the pack, dropping a 2:01.71 of his own to bump Nicolas Albiero (2:01.83) to seventh. As per usual, Katie Ledecky proved why she is the best in the world. Going nearly five seconds off her seed time, Ledecky still managed to secure the top seed with ease, beating Madisyn Cox (4:11.58) by over nine seconds with a time of 4:02.40. Cox faced more of a challenge, as she worked to fend off Megan Byrnes (4:13.28) throughout the race in order to set a precedent for tonight’s finals swim. Despite an impressive closing 50, Byrnes conceded second and used her remaining energy to box Brooke Forde (4:13.54) out of the middle lanes, with Sierra Schmidt following close behind (4:13.96).
Hannah Moore fed off her fresh confidence from last night’s swim, dropping a 4:14.22 this morning to take down Aly McHugh (4:14.63). Joanna Evans flexed her middle-distance muscle with an impressive 4:14.65 to round out a close and loaded heat.

Zane Grothe struck again, showcasing his skills in mid-distance with a runaway win and a time of 3:50.45. His closest competitor was Felix Auboeck, who clocked in five seconds later with a 3:55.46 to cinch the second place seed. His teammate, Patrick Callan, gave Auboeck a run at the finish, narrowly conceding the second seed with a time of 3:55.67.
The race was reminiscent of a sprint event, as second and fourth place were separated by less than three tenths of a second. Mikey Calvillo will be a contender tonight despite his seed, as his time of 3:55.72 puts him within easy striking distance of Auboeck. Spectators should keep an eye on Johannes Callon, who dropped a 3:56.02 to take fifth. A consistent freestyler, Callon will only need to make small changes to his evening race to see a substantial time drop from this morning. Ricardo Vargas crashed the pads with a 3:56.69 to beat Marcelo Acosta (3:56. 81), who will swim across the pool from Eric Knowles (3:57.77) in this evening’s finals heat.
