2019 Speedo Winter Junior Nationals East: Jake Magahey Nearly Takes Down Phelps NAG Record With 4:12 500 (RACE VIDEO)
2019 Speedo Winter Junior Nationals East
Day Two Finals
The 2019 Speedo Winter Junior Nationals East continued from Atlanta, Georgia with the finals of the 500 free, 200 IM and 50 free on the heat sheets. The 400 medley relay will also close out the finals session.
Meet records fell on Thursday night from Jake Magahey in the 500 free and Carson Foster in the 200 IM. Claire Curzan did not set a meet record but did take down a National Age Group record in the 50 free in the 15-16 age group.
Speedo Winter Junior Nationals East Details:
Women’s 500 Free
Abigail McCulloh of Swim Atlanta took advantage of swimming in her home pool in the 500 free with a 4:41.53 as she used a good back half to win ahead of Club Wolverine’s Kaylee Williams (4:45.62) and Swim Florida’s Olivia McMurray (4:46.75). McCulloh dropped two seconds off her prelims time of 4:43 as the 16-year-old moved from 67th to tied for 31st in the all-time 15-16 NAG rankings.
McCulloh is in her junior year of high school and has already committed to Auburn for the fall of 2021. Williams will be a freshman at Kentucky next fall while McMurray will be at Texas in two years.

Men’s 500 Free
Swim Atlanta made it 2-for-2 in victories on the night as 18-year-old Jake Magahey dropped the hammer in the men’s 500 with a 4:12.72, getting oh-so-close to the national age group record of 4:12.33 set by Michael Phelps in 2004. Magahey came in with a best time of 4:14.6 as the national public school record holder dropped two seconds to nearly crack the NAG record. The overall national high school record is a 4:12.8 and Magahey is in the driver’s seat at taking that down as well. Magahey won over fellow World Juniors team member Jake Mitchell (4:15.03) of Carmel Swim Club.
Magahey also broke the Speedo Junior Nationals meet record of 4:14.40 that Jack LeVant set in 2017.
Mitchell took it out with Magahey but could not hold on over the back half as Magahey pulled away. Both guys will be headed to traditional distance programs next year with Magahey staying in-state at the University of Georgia and Mitchell heading north to the University of Michigan.
Third place went to 17-year-old Nathan Borges of Somerset Valley with a 4:22.38.

Women’s 200 IM
Marlins of Raleigh’s Abby Arens swam a 1:56.48 in winning the 200 IM, moving herself up to 34th all-time in the 17-18 age group as she won in a tight race over Dynamo’s Tristen Ulett (1:56.54) and Swim MAC’s Kiley Wilhelm (1:56.95). Arens will be a freshman at NC State next fall as she came into the day with a best time of 1:59 in this event, lowering three full seconds to a 1:56. Ulett finished in second and will be a freshman at Louisville next fall.
Wilhelm finished in third from lane 1 with a big drop of four seconds from this morning. She is now 16th all-time in the 15-16 age group in the 200 IM at just 15-years-old in her freshman year of high school.

Men’s 200 IM
18-year-old Carson Foster of the Mason Manta Rays won his third straight junior national title in the 200 IM with a 1:42.43 to break his own meet record of 1:42.54 from last year. That also improved his standing among the 17-18 all-time list, remaining fourth as he was probably gunning for the record of 1:41.39 by David Nolan set in 2011.
Alas, Foster will have to wait until the spring to try and take another crack at Nolan’s record. He is following up a successful showing in Atlanta last week at the US Open where he finished runner-up in both the 200 and 400 IM, finishing behind Chase Kalisz and ahead of Ryan Lochte. Foster will be a freshman at the University of Texas next fall.
Swim MAC’s Tim Connery, who swam with Foster at the 2018 Junior Pan Pacs, finished in second at 1:44.05 to lower his best from this morning at 1:44.4. He is now ranked 21st in the 17-18 all-time rankings, moving up eight spots from this morning. Connery will be a freshman at the University of Michigan in the fall of 2021.
Third place went to World Juniors team member Wyatt Davis of Carmel Swim Club at 1:44.62. Davis also swam a new best time, dropping from his 1:45.5 this morning as he moved from 62nd to 36th all-time in the 17-18 all-time rankings. Davis will be a freshman at the University of Michigan next fall.

Women’s 50 Free
15-year-old Claire Curzan of the Tac Titans in North Carolina produced the first individual National Age Group record of the 2019 Speedo Winter Junior Nationals East in Atlanta with an insane 21.77 in the 50 freestyle. That swim by Curzan, who is just a sophomore in high school, broke Gretchen Walsh’s 21.82 NAG record set at last year’s Junior Nationals East in Greensboro. Among college swimmers, Curzan’s time ranks sixth in Division I right now.
Not bad for a 15-year-old.
Claire Curzan was one of our selected swimmers to watch headed into this meet as she was the top seed in six events on the psych sheet. Although, the race we thought she was going to be best at would be the 100 fly after she came in seeded with a 50 point. That is still up in the air as she will swim the 100 fly tomorrow, but this 50 free is extremely impressive.
At just 15-years-old, Curzan is not far off the 17-18 NAG record of 21.3 set by Simone Manuel in 2015 for her first NCAA title. We know what Manuel has done since then: an Olympic gold medal in the 100 free, three individual World titles, plus six individual NCAA titles. And that doesn’t begin to scratch the surface of Manuel’s influence on the sport of swimming, who became the first black woman to win a swimming gold medal and the first American woman to win the 100 free at the Olympics since 1984, which at the time was the longest gold medal drought for the Americans in any event.
It is still way too early to determine where Curzan’s future career will lead. She is still just a sophomore in high school for crying out loud. But she has a lot of talent, as we saw in Atlanta tonight. She won four medals at the FINA World Juniors this summer with a gold in the women’s 4×100 medley relay, a silver in the 100 back, and two bronzes in the 50 and 100 fly.
Curzan won the final by a wide margin with 17-year-old Lindsay Flynn, also a North Carolina native, finishing in second at 22.33 while 16-year-old Lexie Mulvihill (22.57) finished in third.

Men’s 50 Free
Jack Aikins stole the 50 free final from lane seven with a 19.86 as he claimed the third win of the night for Swim Atlanta. Aikins also finished 1-2 with Jake Magahey, the winner of the 500, as he swam a 19.95. Magahey originally tied for second with Jack Alexy, but he drew a disqualification, bumping up William Cole of Lakeside in Kentucky to third place at 20.09.
Aikins, just 17, had a huge drop from his 20.3 earlier this year in March to move into a six-way tie for 64th all-time in the 17-18 age group with Scott Goodrich, Austin Staab, Brendon Andrews, Austin Flager and Cam Peel.
Magahey also moved up to a tie for 95th all-time in the same age group as he was not far removed from his 500 win earlier in the session. Aikins is a junior and has already committed to the University of Virginia. Will Cole will also be a freshman at the University of Virginia next fall.
