2019 Speedo Sectionals Mt. Hood Day 2: Jack Hoagland Takes First, Third
The second night of 2019 Speedo Sectionals Mt. Hood was filled with repeat finalists. As well as strong performances from prelims to finals. The Denver Hilltoppers continue their reign with multiple top 8 finishes leading in the combined scores with 1193 points.

Currently sitting in second place for the combined scores is Tualatin Hills at 896 points. Not far behind for third is Phoenix Swim Club at 827 points.
Women’s 200 Free
18-year-old Katharine Berkoff of Missoula Aquatic Club took this event with a time of 2:03.09, dropping over a second from her entry time. Right behind her were a pair of 2:04’s, Lily Gardner, from Tualatin Hills Swim Team posted a time of 2:04.12, and Haley Hill of Bronco Swim Club followed for third with a 2:04.61. Ryan Falk finished fourth with 2:05.54, followed by Kathryn Shanely at 2:05.83. Then came Andi Johnston at 2:07.25, Aysia Leckie at 2:07.52, and Mackenzie Nedom at 2:08.18.
Men’s 200 Free
Jack Hoagland of Charger Aquatics snatched the crown with a time of 1:52.51. Second place was Cole Giandinoto of Swim Utah at 1:53.46. Following was Benjamin Waterman of Swim Utah at 8:24.05 for third moving up from his 18th seed. Fourth place was Hugo Sykes at 1:53.78, followed by Kevin Jackson at 1:53.94, Trent Martinez at 1:55.25, and Darragh Mahns at 1:56.36 and following behind for 8th was Ethan Luc at 1:57.80.
Women’s 400 IM
In the night’s longest individual event, Mia Rankin from Phoenix Swim Club dropped over four seconds clocking in at 4:53.19 winning by five seconds. Following behind for second and third were Charity Pittard from Boise YMCA at 4:58.55 and Mary Codevilla from Elevation Athletics at 4:59.62. Right behind Codevilla was Charlotte Simon at a 4:59.80, followed by Lauren Burckel at 5:00.68. Then came Katharine Adams at 5:03.02, Sadie Edwards at 5:03.54 and Millia Ruthven at 5:04.52.
Men’s 400 IM
Swim Utah’s Jackson Cunningham claimed the title in this event after a two-second drop with a time of 4:26.39. However, it was a close race for second for Jacob Hand of Charger Aquatics (4:30.20) and teammate Jack Hoagland who slammed into the wall with a time of 4:30.63 for third just off a first-place finish in the 200 free. In fourth was Daniel Matheson with a 4:31.17, fifth was Kyle Benjamin at 4:33.07. Coming in sixth place was Tristan McFarland who touched at 4:34.95. Seventh place went to Devin Esser (4:39.012) and eighth place went to Landon Driggers (4:40.72).
Women’s 100 Back
This event was a nail-biter to the finish. Four women were under 1:04 however, Lake Oswego’s Mara Newman out-touched the field for the title at 1:03.15. Right behind her for second was Katelyn Lewicki of Elevation Athletics at 1:03.75. Emma Lawless of Swim Utah touched at 1:03.86 for third. Kaitlyn McCoy touched next at 1:04.51, ahead of Katelyn Laderoute at 1:04.90. Touching the wall at sixth Natalie Arky coming in at 1:04.61, followed by Isabella Wallace at 1:04.78, and Molly Hogg at 1:05.24.
Men’s 100 Back
Phoenix Swim Club’s Meguru Hotta claimed the title in this event after a half-second drop with a time of 56.35. He was closely followed by Gavin Olson of Foothills Swim Team touching in second at 56.66. Harrison Lierz of Elevation Athletics touched at 57.17 for third. Closely behind Lierz was Cale Berkoff who finished at 57.35. Wilder Kruse touched next at 58.02, ahead of Jackson Cunningham at 58.87 who claimed the title in the 400 IM. Following was Zachary Tan who came in at 58.91 and Landon Diggers at 1:00.17.
Women’s 400 Free Relay
The first night of relays ended in a dominate win for the “A” team from the University of Denver Hilltoppers securing first place with a time of 3:54.58. Coming into the wall second was Bainbridge Island Swim Club at 3:57.79. Following close behind for third was Elevation Aquatics at 3:58.57.
Men’s 400 Free Relay
On the men’s side, the Denver Hilltoppers also secured another first-place finish with a two-second lead clocking in at 3:27.21. Charger Aquatics received a second-place finish following the Hilltoppers with a time of 3:29.66. Rounding out the top 3 was the Tualatin Hills Swim Club securing the bronze at 3:29.84.
Day 3 of the Speedo Sectionals Mt. Hood kicks off tomorrow with prelims in the morning at 9 a.m. PST and finals in the evening at 5:30 p.m. PST.
