2019 Speedo Sectionals Minneapolis Day 2: Isabelle Stadden Wins 100 Back

The energy and time drops have been cooking up on Day 2 here in Minneapolis. Highlights include a twist with an “outside smoke” win, a splash of nail-biting close finishes, and a stir of relay fun. Wisconsin Aquatics, Fox Valley Swim Team, and Hawkeye Swim Club continue to show dominance and depth at Speedo Sectional in Minneapolis location. The events covered today will be the 200 Freestyle, 400 Individual Medley, 100 Backstroke, and the 400 Freestyle Relay.

Women’s 200 Free

To kick off day two’s evening, Hannah Burvill of the Hawkeye Swim Club comfortably takes first with a winning time of 2:00.85. Tevyn Waddel was shortly behind her clocking in at 2:02.90, while the 800 Freestyle winner of last night, Rachel Stege, touches at 2:03.29. 

Fourth place went to Alana Palmer at 2:03.87, fifth to Katelyn Blattner at 2:04.21, and sixth to Madison Waechter at 2:04.82. Delta Aquatics’s Grace Cooper went a 2:05.25 to out touch Kaylyn Schoof at 2:05.47 to conclude the A final.

Men’s 200 Free

The Men’s 200 Free was a close race across the field, but Cameron Kelley of the Linn- Mar Swim Team came out ahead on the touch with a 1:52.34. 

Second through sixth place was a measure of a quick six tenths, proving how competitive this heat was. Ryan Netzel (1:53.34)  touched behind Kelley to get second, and was followed by Jackson Allmon (1:53.53), Ean Vandergraaf (1:53.57), Stjepan Fiolic (1:53.80), and Jacob Harlan (1:53.91). Only 2 tenths behind Harlan were Nicholas Saulnier (1:54.28) and Michael Linnihan (1:53.33).

Women’s 400 Individual Medley

Emma Lasecki pulled an outside smoke from Lane 1 to win the Women’s 400 I.M. at 4:57.27. Mallory Jump (5:27.27), and Callahan Dunn (5:57.73) fought hard till the finish to take second and third. Kelli McCarthy was able to break 5:00 and touch at 4:58.55. The top seed after prelims going into the finals but placed fifth at finals was Abbey Erwin and came into the wall at 5:00.65. Following Erwin were Magdalena Emary (5:01.11), Megan Hutchins (5:02.40), and Sydney Rogness (5:05.00).

Men’s 400 Individual Medley

Caleb Aman from Wisconsin Aquatics dominated the field to win the event at 4:27.61. Fellow Wisconsin Aquatics teammate, Graham Miotke, was the runner up with a time of 4:33.61.

In third was Seth Borget (4:35.69), fourth was Michael Benington (4:36.95), and fifth was Kyle Lewarchick (4:37.02). The third and final wave of finishes included Timothy Rizzo (4:43.78), Benjamin Ramminger (4:45.55), and Austin Cabel (4:47.46).

Women’s 100 Backstroke

Top seed Isabelle Stadden slams into the wall first with a winning time of 1:00.48. Tevyn Waddell takes her second second-place finish of the night at 1:01.43 In third was Margaret Wanezek (1:02.19), fourth was Megan Armstrong (1:02.62), and fifth was Margaret Guanci (1:02.91). 

Lane 8’s and Swimming Worlds very own, Jamie Kolar, touched in sixth at 1:03.18, a best time. The winner of the 200 Freestyle earlier tonight, Hannah Burvill, came in seventh at 1:03.30. Hannah Lindsey rounds out the A final with a time of 1:03.68.

Men’s 100 Backstroke

As the distance gets shorter, the times get closer! The Men’s 100 Backstroke was a race to the finish. 18 year-old Peter Larson takes the win at 56.37. Maximillian St. George of Fox Valley came in second at 56.76, and John Colin came in third with a 56.83. 

Tyler Klatt (57.58) of Wyoming began the 57 wave, followed by Griffin O’Leary (57.71), Collin Schuster (57.75), William Brenton (57.76), and Daniel Sivak (57.90).

Women’s 400 Freestyle Relay

The loudest and most audience-engaged part of the night came around, and the swimmers did not disappoint. The top four teams were tight across the 8 lengths of the race, but Hawkeye Swim Club was first the wall. The Hawkeye Swim Club (3:48.45) came in first by over a second, ahead of Elmbrook Swim Club (3:49.64). Wisconsin Aquatics came in third with a time of 3:49.75, just ahead of Fox Valley Swim team at 3:50.83. 

Fifth through eight were all within a half of a second of each other, making every spectator lean to the edge of their seat. Illini Swimming (3:56.31) took home fifth, followed by Riptide (3:46.42), Edina Swim Club (3:46.45), and Schroeder YMCA (3:56.82).

Men’s 400 Freestyle Relay

Each swim team brought their absolute A-game, which made for it to be an exciting event to watch. Elmbrook Swim Club pulled an upset and took home the gold at a time of 3:27.96. Just eleven hundredths behind, was Wisconsin Aquatics at 3:28.07. Hawkeye Swim Club (3:27.96), was just ahead of Wyoming Aquatics (3:29.26). Fox Valley Swim Team (3:30.61)  finished fifth, and out touched fellow Illinois team’s, St.Charles Swim Team (3:31.09), and West Swim Club (3:32.61). To round out the top 8 came Edina Swim Club at 3:33.90.
