2019 New Zealand Swimming Championship: Thomas and Doyle Qualify for FINA World Championships

The last night of the 2019 New Zealand Swimming Championship was one for the record books. The Women’s 800m Freestyle was one to watch tonight with four potential swimmers possibly finishing under the qualifying time for World Championships. It was Eve Thomas, Carina Doyle who touched with A qualifying times for the FINA World Championships. Tyron Henry broke the New Zealand Age Record from 1995 in the 100 free. 14-year old Melissa Cowen broke a New Zealand Age Record in the women’s 100 breast. The women competed in the 100 free, 800 free, 100 breast and 400 free relay. The men competed in the 100 free, 200 fly, 100 breast, 1500 free and 400 free relay.

Men’s 100 Free

Daniel Hunter of Howick Pakuranga with a time of 49.73 on the final night of the 2019 New Zealand Swimming Championships. In second was Matthew Stanley of Matamata Swim Club with a time of 49.96.  In third was Tyron Henry of Howick Pakuranga with a time of 50.13. In fourth was Carter Swift of Hawera Swimming Club with a time of 50.24. In fifth was Corey Main of Howick Pakuranga with a time of 50.26. In sixth was Luke Gebbie of Philippine Swimming with a time of 50.45.  In seventh was Bayley Main of Howick Pakuranga with a time of 50.75. In eighth was Andrew Jeffcoat of Pukekohe Swimming Club with a time of 51.49.

Women’s 100 Free

Erika Fairweather of Neptune Swim Club touched first with a time of 55.74 for her third win of the meet at the 2019 New Zealand Swimming Championships. In second was Gabrielle Fa’amausili of United Swimming Club with a time of 56.33.  In third was Chelsey Edwards of Capital Swim Club with a time of 56.59. In fourth was Emma Godwin of Heretaunga Sundevils with a time of 56.86. In fifth was Ella Ramsay of St Peter’s Western with a time of 57.23. In sixth was Paige Flynn of St Peter’s Swimming Club with a time of 57.43. In seventh was Laura Littlejohn of St Paul’s Swimming Club with a time of 57.50. Olivia Collins of St Peter’s Western rounded out the heat with a time of 57.81.

Men’s 200 Fly

Wilrich Coetzee of North Shore Swimming Club touched first with a time of 1:58.51 on the last day of the 2019 New Zealand Swimming Championships. In second was Lochlainn O’Connor of Evolution Aquatics Tauranga with a time of 2:00.67. In third was Atakura Julian of Capital Swim Club with a time of 2:03.43.  In fourth was Jeremy Tasker of North Canterbury Swim Club Inc with a time of 2:06.03.  In fifth was Joel Crampton of Capital Swim Club with a time of 2:06.79.  In sixth was William Campbell of Wharenui Swim Club with a time of 2:07.34. In seventh was Satori Dobbie of Qeii Swim Club with a time of 2:08.26. In eighth was Andrew Rattray of Howick Pakuranga with a time of 2:08.78.

Women’s 800 Free

Eve Thomas of Coast Swimming Club touched first with a time of 8:41.31 at the 2019 New Zealand Swimming Championships. Thomas was able to qualify for the World Championships in four weeks. Carina Doyle of North Shore Swimming Club followed in second with a time of 8:45.76 also qualifying herself for the World Championships. Hayley McIntosh of Phoenix Aquatics was third in a time of 8:46.63. In fourth was Caitlin Deans of Neptune Swim Club with a time of 8:47.26.  In fifth was Emma Robinson of Capital Swim Club with a time of 8:49.30. In sixth was Ruby Heath of Capital Swim Club with a time of 9:04.44.  In seventh was Naia Anderson of Mt Maunganui Swimming Club with a time of 9:16.44In eighth was Bree Middleton of Ashburton Swim Team with a time of 9:19.82.

Men’s 100 Breast

Eliot Lundon-Moore of Capital Swim Club won the event with a time of 1:02.39 to close out the 2019 New Zealand Swimming Championships.  In second was Julian Layton of Heretaunga Sundevils with a time of 1:02.55.  In a tie for third was Taichi Vakasama of Fiji Swimming and Jonathan Rutter of North Shore Swimming Club with a time of 1:02.85.  In fifth was Jiahao Gong of Shanghai Swimming Team with a time of 1:02.88.  In sixth was Josh Gilbert of Evolution Aquatics Tauranga with a time of 1:03.18. In seventh was Josh Pickett of Matamata Swim Club with a time of 1:03.44. Rounding out the heat was Matthew Holder of Phoenix Aquatics with a time of 1:03.93.

Women’s 100 Breast

Bronagh Ryan of Capital Swim Club won the event with a time of 1:10.94 at the 2019 New Zealand Swimming Championships. In second was Helena Gasson of Coast Swimming Club with a time of 1:10.97. In third was Ciara Smith of Northwave Swim Club with a time of 1:10.98.  On fourth was Melissa Cowen of North Shore Swimming Club with a time of 1:11.28. In fifth was Mikayla Dance of United Swimming Club with a time of 1:12.48.  In sixth was Lea Muellner of Raumati Swimming Club with a time of 1:13.41. In seventh was Phoebe Harris of Howick Pakuranga with a time of 1:13.60. Cassie Wright of Qeii Swim Club was eighth with a time of 1:14.49.

Men’s 1500 Free

In first was Zac Reid of Aquabladz New Plymouth Swimming with a time of 15:23.62. In a tie for second was Zhou Wang of Shanghai Swimming and Quinton Hurley of Jasi Swim Club with times of 15:25.69. In third was Bronson Lloyd of Raumati Swimming Club with a time of 15:58.54. In fifth was Louis Clark of Aquagym Swimming Club with a time of 16:08.30. In sixth was Phoenix Douglas of Capital Swim Club with a time of 16:10.52. In seventh was Riley Taylor of Swim Timaru with a time of 16:19.38. Joseph Stewart of Pirates Swim Team touched eighth was 16:27.51.

Woman’s 400 Free Relay

In a tie for first was St Peter’s Western and North Shore Swimming Club with times of 3:52.59. In second was St. Paul’s Swimming Club with a time of 3:58.27.

Men’s 400 Free Relay

In first was Howick Pakuranga with a time of 3:20.81. Their team consisted of Tyron Henry, Corey Main, Bayley Main and Daniel Hunter. In second was North Shore Swimming Club A with a time of 3:27.94. In third was North Shore Swimming Club B with a time of 3:31.96.
