By Olivia Wile, Swimming World College Intern.

This evening marked day two of finals at the 2019 NCAA Division III National Championships. Tonight’s action-packed session was full of close finishes, two ties and a broken record.

Denison University, Kenyon College and Emory University brought home their fair share of wins this evening. Denison took the women’s 200 free relay with Drake Horton winning the men’s 200 free for the big red. Emory did just the opposite, winning the men’s 200 free relay while looking to Fiona Muir for an individual win in the women’s 200 free as well as a killer anchor leg to win the 400 medley relay.

It was an exciting night for Kenyon as well with Michael Bartholomew winning a close 400 IM. David Fitch took first in the 100 fly with a record breaking time of 46.92 with teammate Jonathan Zimdars placing in top three as well.

Women’s 200 Free Relay

It was a Denison relay win that kicked off this session of finals. The team of Madison Hopkins, Casey Kirby, Gabriella Nutter and KT Kustriz got to the wall first with a time of 1:32.28. Giving the Dennison women a close race was the Kenyon team of Andrea Perttula, Caylee Hamilton, Abigail Wilson and Emmerson Mirus. The women finished a little off their prelims time with a 1:32.88.

Also adding a bit from this morning were the Emory women. The team of Fiona Muir, Zoe Walker, Hannah Lally and Megan Taylor finished with a time of 1:33.40.

Men’s 400 IM

It was Michael Bartholomew that took home an exciting 400 IM win this evening. The Kenyon junior fought off the field finishing first with a time of 3:50.66. He finished tenth in the event last year. Coming in a close second with a time of 3:51.12 was teammate Bryan Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald was seeded a place above Bartholomew going into finals.

Top seed freshman Zachary Lorson of Emory fell to third place this evening with a time of 3:51.40.

Four and fifth went to Denison teammates and juniors Robert Wang and Robert Williams. Wang finished fourth (3:51.46) with Williams taking fifth (3:51.70).

The excitement continued with a tie for sixth between Emory freshman Jason Hamilton and Denison senior Matthew Hedman. Both finished with a time of 3:53.07.

Finishing behind the field was junior Colin Reardon of Keyon finishing eighth (3:58.23).

Women’s 100 Fly

It hasn’t always been smooth sailing for Williams senior Maia Hare, but this year she is the women’s 100 fly national champion. Hare swam in the consolation final both her freshman and sophomore year, while last year she didn’t qualify for finals at all. Tonight, however, she got to the wall first with a time of 54.58.

The story was a bit different for top seed Madison Hopkins of Denison. Leading the field during the last few yards, an extra stroke is what cost her the title. She finished second with a time of 54.75.

There was another finals tie this evening, but this time for third. Junior Alison MacQueen of Washington and Lee University and sophomore Carolin Apathy of Bates College both finished with a time of 54.90.

Only a hundredth behind them was sophomore Laurita May of Bowdoin College finishing fifth (54.91). In sixth with a time of 55.21 was senior Clara Baker of Ursinus College. Zoe Whelan of Denison got to the wall next with a time of 55.51 while NYU’s Terra Matsushima finished eighth (56.24).
