The second morning of the 2019 NCAA Division I Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships in Austin, Texas, will have the heats of the 200 free relay, 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free and 400 medley relay. Stanford has the lead in the team standings after winning the 800 free relay on Wednesday night.
Stanford and Cal had the best mornings on Thursday in Austin, Texas as the Cardinal had five A-Finalists advance to tonight and Cal had four.
Cal is on top of the prelims in the 200 free relay and Michigan is on top of the 400 medley relay.
Arizona State’s Cierra Runge, Stanford’s Ella Eastin and Cal’s Abbey Weitzeil are on top in the individual events.
200 Free Relay
The Cal Golden Bears used a second-half surge to take the top seed in the 200 free relay, as Maddie Murphy, Katie McLaughlin, Amy Bilquist and Abbey Weitzeil finished in 1:26.25.
Michigan took the early lead in the final heat with a 21.70 split by Maggie MacNeil, finishing just ahead of USC’s leadoff Marta Ciesla (21.90).
But after a 21.37 split by McLaughlin, the back-half of Bilquist (21.57) and Weitzeil (21.11) was too much for the field as Cal finished ahead of the pack.
The NCAA and American record was set by Stanford last year at 1:25.43, and Cal will look to go even faster to chase down that mark.
But a stunning split by Mallory Comerford (20.94) gave Louisville (1:26.72) the second seed and Tennessee (1:26.89) took the third seed, from the second prelims heat, behind an anchor split of 21.13 by Erika Brown.
Stanford took the fourth seed (1:26.91), followed by Michigan (1:26.92), NC State (1:27.12), Texas (1:27.33) and Auburn (1:27.40).
Despite a fast start by Ciesla, USC just missed the finals, taking the ninth seed in 1:28.02. Missouri (1:28.13), Duke (1:28.64), Ohio State (1:28.61), Texas A&M (1:28.82), Arizona (1:28.97), North Carolina (1:29.12) and Georgia 1:29.14) rounded out the top 16.
Arkansas swimmer Anna Hopkin clocked a 20.97 split, but the Razorbacks did not reach the top 16 (1:29.96).

500 Free
Arizona State’s Cierra Runge had plenty left in the tank for a strong finish in the 500 free prelims. The junior had a final split of 27.07 to take the top seed for tonight’s final in 4:34.64.
No one is expected to approach Katie Ledecky’s record time of 4:24.06, set at the 2017 NCAA championships.
But there are two Stanford swimmers in the final. Brooke Forde took the second seed in 4:34.97 and Lauren Pitzer heads to the finals with the sixth seed in 4:35.80.
Minnesota has two in the final with Chantal Nack taking the third spot (4:35.47) and Mackenzie Padington taking the fifth (4:35.70).
Virginia’s Paige Madden took the fourth spot in 4:35.65. Texas sophomore Evie Pfeifer was seventh (4:36.04) and Georgia’s Courtney Harnish took the eighth seed (4:37.30) .
Last year’s runner-up Katie Drabot took the 15th seed in 4:39.07.

200 IM
Stanford’s Ella Eastin broke the pool record to take the top seed in the 200 IM.
No surprise there.
But there were a couple of surprises.
Michigan’s Siobhan Haughey was disqualified for multiple butterfly kicks during her breaststroke pullout. Her time was fast enough to make the finals.
The other surprise was that Lilly King did not make the top 16. Though not her top event, King has scored in the IM in previous years. She finished 21st (1:56.83).
Behind Eastin was Texas A&M’s Sydney Pickrem, second in 1:52.75.
Wisconsin’s Beata Nelson took the third seed in 1:52.83, followed by USC’s Louise Hansson (1:53.50), Kentucky’s Asia Seidt (1:5351), South Carolina’s Emma Barksdale (1:53.52), Tennessee’s Meghan Small (1:54.54) and Indiana’s Bailey Anderson (1:54.75).

400 Medley Relay
The Michigan Wolverines are on top of the 400 medley relay heats with a 3:27.17 as Taylor Garcia (52.44), Miranda Tucker (58.19), Maggie MacNeil (49.94) and Siobhan Haughey (46.60) are on top of a tightly packed field. They are ahead of Big Ten rival Indiana (3:27.89) as the Hoosiers, who defeated Michigan at Big Tens, placed second this morning. The Indiana women have never won a relay at NCAAs and this could be their best shot.
Morgan Scott (52.01), Lilly King (56.47), Christie Jensen (51.46) and Shelby Koontz (47.95) swam for the Hoosiers as they will have lane five in the final.
Cal is the third seed with a 3:28.03 this morning from Austin, Texas with Keaton Blovad (52.26), Ema Rajic (58.74), Katie McLaughlin (50.26) and Abbey Weitzeil (46.77) swimming for them.
NC State (3:28.20), Louisville (3:28.47), Virginia (3:29.71), Minnesota (3:29.93) and Stanford (3:30.19) also qualified for the A-Final as the race could come down between four or five teams for the national title. Stanford has won the last five NCAA titles in this relay.
The quickest splits outside the top three teams came from Texas’ Claire Adams (51.44), Virginia’s Alexis Wenger (57.62), Wisconsin’s Beata Nelson (50.54) and Louisville’s Mallory Comerford (45.98). Other notable splits came from Florida State’s Ida Hulkko (57.67) on breaststroke and Louisville’s Grace Oglesby (50.92) on butterfly.
