2019 NCAA DIII Championships Prelims Day 2 Live Recap
By Taylor Covington, Swimming World College Intern.
The 2019 NCAA DIII Championships kicked off its second day of competition in the Greensboro Aquatic Center, where the best athletes in the division met for a cross-conference battle. The Emory women and Denison men entered prelims with the advantage, but as the teams squared off for point-scoring night swims, it soon became anyone’s game.
Women 200 Free Relay
The first event’s results closely mirrored the psych sheet, with few surprises going into the championship final. Denison took its first step in attempting to dethrone Emory, seizing the top seed going into tonight with its lethal combination of Madison Hopkins, Casey Kirby, Gabriella Nutter, and Katherine Kustritz who touched in with a time of 1:32.28. Kenyon (1:32.88) slid into second in the final two legs of the race, where Abigail Wilson and Emmerson Mirus split sub-23 to cinch the next best seed along with their teammates Andrea Perttula and Caylee Hamilton. Emory’s Fiona Muir, Zoe Walker, Hannah Lally, and Megan Taylor secured a lane next to Denison with a time of 1:33.40, pulling away from Pomona-Pitzer’s Hannah Zurmuhl, Alison Liru, Katherine Denend, and Madison Kauahi (1:34.19).
John Hopkins (1:34.25), Bowdoin (1:34.33), W&L (1:34.63), and Ursinus (1:34.67) filled in the rest of the A-final all within 0.42 of one another to make for an exciting points-race heading into this eventing.

Men 200 Free Relay
It was a tight race on the men’s side, as the crowd resorted to their apps for affirmation of Denison’s narrow victory, courtesy of its sprinting stalwarts Kymani Senior, Drake Horton, Liam Picozzi, and Matthew McHugh (1:20.41). It was a heart-breaker for Emory fans, as Sage Ono, Zachary Chen, Colin Lafave, and Trey Kolleck just missed the middle lane with a time of 1:20.49. Not to be discounted, Kenyon’s Joseph Black, David Fitch, Thomas Weiss, and AJ Reid remain a threat for tonight, touching in at 1:20.65 with a healthy lead over Chicago’s Jonathan Mednley, Byrne Lutschgi, Winston Wang, and Nathaniel Davenport (1:21.14).
Johns Hopkins (1:21.26), Calvin (1:21.52), USMMA (1:21.54), and Tufts (1:21.75) secured lanes in the championship final for a second chance at the championship.

Women 400 IM
The 400 IM was essentially a race of three, with Williams’ secret weapon, Molly Craig, coming out on top with a time of 4:20.97. Having prevented an Emory 1-2 sweep, Craig will separate Clio Hancock (4:21.11) and Julia Durmer (4:21.35) in the finals lanes tonight with hopes of establishing a presence for the Ephs. Out-splitting both her competitors in the fly leg, Craig will need to capitalize on that front-end speed for tonight’s championship.
Leading the second wave of finalists was Denison’s Natalie Zaravella, who dropped a 4:23.86 to secure fourth, courtesy of a strong back-half race to edge out NYU’s Honore Collins (4:24.92). The outer lanes will be occupied by Denison’s Erica Hsu (4:24.92), Amherst’s Bridgitte Kwong (4:26.80), and Union’s Kerry Kelly (4:27.02)

Men 400 IM
Emory reclaimed its position on top with an impressive swim from Zachary Lorson (3:52.61), who secured his top seed almost solely due to his backstroke leg, where he out-split Denison’s Matthew Hedman (3:52.69) enough to hold him off for the remainder of the race. Hedman’s teammate, Robert Williams (3:52.85) proved himself a major contender for the championship tonight, out-swimming two Kenyon stand-outs, Bryan Fitgerald (3:53.26) and Michael Bartholomew (3:54.11).
Denison’s Robert Wang (3:54.15), Kenyon’s Colin Reardon (3:54.24), and Emory’s Jason Hamilton (3:54.48) will enter as the underdogs, but spectators should watch for outside smoke, as the three partake in a points battle for their respective top teams.

Women 100 Fly
Coming off an impressive split in the first relay, Denison’s Madison Hopkins decided to secure her second middle lane of the night by dropping a 54.51 in the 100 fly. By no means was she alone, however, as W&L’s Alison Macqueen stroked in for the finish just 0.07 later, beating Williams’ Maia Hare (54.75) with a time of 54.58. With all three women splitting nearly identical final 50s, the race may come down to the fastest off the block, something Hopkins does especially well.
Seeded second on the psych sheet, Ursinus senior Clara Baker (54.88) dropped to fourth in this morning’s swim ahead of Bowdoin’s Mary Laurita (54.95). Bate’s Caroline Apathy (55.07), NYU’s Terra Matsushima (55.31) and Zoe Whelan (55.37) rounded out the A-final with impressive swims across the board. With six women under 55, the title-winning swim could truly come from any lane this evening.

Men 100 Fly
Kenyon’s David Fitch made his second appearance of the morning with a winning performance in the 100 fly, clocking in at 47.73 to be one of two men under 48 heading into tonight. MIT cinched its first A-finals swim of the day with a stellar swim by Bouke Edskes (47.86), one that sets him up well to rake in major points for the prestigious institution later tonight. Kenyon’s Jonathon Zimdars just eclipsed the sub-48 mark, positioning himself on the other side of Fitch for tonight’s battle for the championship. CMS’s Marco Conati also seized his team’s first championship lane of the morning, following close behind Zimdars to post a time of 48.18.
Emory’s Hwamin Sim (48.20), John Hopkins’ Brandon Fabian (48.24), Denison’s Kenny Fox (48.36), and Washington’s Andrew Pek (48.48) filled the remaining spots for an A-finals swim, all within 0.3 of one another to make for a nail-biter tonight.

Women 200 Freestyle
Emory’s Fiona Muir (1:48.53) maintained a narrow lead throughout the race to seize the top finals spot ahead of Bowdoin’s Sterling Dixon (1:48.69), who narrowly escaped the middle lane in her first 50, the only split in which Muir was faster. Williams landed another swimmer in the A-final, with Laura Westphal touching in just 0.12 after Dixon, courtesy of a consistently split race.
That was the last of the 1:48s, as Hannah Orbach-Mandel slid into fourth with a 1:49.05, maintaining a healthy distance between herself and BSC’s Rebecca Erwin (1:49.63). Kenyon’s Kendall Vanderhoof (1:49.94) claimed sixth ahead of her teammate Abigail Wilson (1:49.96). Amherst’s Natalie Rumpelt will round out tonight’s heat, going in with a 1:50.86 seed.

Denison continued to exhibit strength in freestyle, as Drake Horton out-touched John Hopkins’ Noah Corbitt (1:37.91) to win prelims with a time of 1:37.80. James Lovette’s 1:37.95 is the time to beat in order to break into the top-three, as the Williams’ sophomore will be looking to tally more points for the Ephs.
W&L sophomore Patrick Sullivan (1:38.30) will contend for a medal tonight, entering at fourth seed ahead of Kenyon’s Robert Williams (1:38.38), Denison’s Brad Stevenson (1:38.46), Emory’s Kellen Stillman (1:38.49), and Calvin’s Julian Iturbe (1:38.88). With men seeded 4-8 all separated by just a little over half a second, the race to the podium could be one of the highlights of the night.

Men 400 Relay
Denison proved victorious on the men’s side, with Carson Clear, Tiernan Foster-Smith, Kenny Fox, and Kymani Senior posting a 3:14.92 to run away with the win. It was enough to bump Emory (3:15.35) to second seed despite a second and a half drop from their entry time, as Sage Ono, Jason Hamilton, Hwamin Sim, and Mathias Kolleck had to battle Washington University coming up from behind. Washington’s Peyton Wilson, Kevin Va Cleave, Andrew Pok, and Gregory Van Patten finished with a 3:15.60 to narrowly concede second and take their position on the other side of Denison for the finals, while John Hopkins’ Emile Kuyl, Maxwell Chen, Jeffrey Vitek, and Nathaniel Davenport dropped a 3:16.16 to secure fourth.
Chicago (3:16.29), Kenyon (3:16.39), Amherst (3:16.64), and Calvin (3:16.72) made up the third wave, as they rounded out the preliminaries and claimed their finals lanes for the evening.
