2019 Ivy League Men’s Championships Day 2: Harvard Continues to Dominate

Entering into the second day of racing, the 2019 Men’s Ivy League Swimming and Diving Championships kicked off with the men’s 500 free as well as the men’s 200 individual medley , the men’s 50 free, the men’s one meter diving, and the session was finally wrapped up with the men’s 200 free relay.
After the second day of competition at the 2019 Men’s Ivy League Swimming and Diving Championships team scores are as followed:
- Harvard – 525.5
- University of Pennsylvania – 384
- Princeton University – 372
- Yale University – 342.5
- Columbia University – 342
- Brown University – 291.5
- Cornell University – 234
- Dartmouth College – 187.5
Results after day two show that Harvard is far ahead of the pack while remaining Ivy League teams battle it out, especially Yale and Columbia who are only separated by half of a point.
Men’s 500 Free
Harvard continues to sweep events on day two of competition. Harvard senior Brennan Novak won the event with a time of 4:15.96. Harvard also had two other men finish within the top eight. Harvard senior Logan Houck snagged third place with a time of 4:20.38, while fellow teammate Zach Snyder finished in seventh with a time of 4:23.93.
Connor LaMastra, swimming for Dartmouth, was at the head of the race with Novak splitting only two hundredths of a second slower than him at the 200 mark. However, his splits fell off pace for the remainder of the race landing him in eight place with a time of 4:24.68. Other swimmers within the top eight include: Penn’s Will Thomas (4:18.72) finishing in second place, Princeton’s Murphy McQuet (4:21.66) in fourth place, Penn’s William Kamps (4:21.79) in fifth place, and Yale’s Adrian Lee (4:22.67) in sixth.

Men’s 200 Individual Medley
The Princeton Tigers earned themselves the spotlight in the men’s 200 IM. freshman, Raunak Khosla dropped over a second from his time in prelims to win the event in a time of 1:42.80. Khosla also broke the Ivy League record in the event by nearly half a second. Following behind Khosla was Penn’s Mark Andrew with a time of 1:42.97. Also from Penn was third place finisher Thomas Dillinger with a time of 1:44.23. Harvard’s Jacob Johnson finished in fourth with a time of 1:44.38. Fifth place went to Brown’s Coley Sullivan touching the wall at 1:45.11. Columbia’s Nianguo Liu finished in sixth with a time of 1:45.66. Seventh place finisher was Penn’s Sean Lee posting a time of 1:46.11, and finishing in eighth was Harvard’s Michael Zarian with a time of 1:46.17.

Men’s 50 Free
Harvard took home their fourth gold medal in the sprint debut of the 2019 Men’s Ivy League Swimming and Diving Championships. Harvard junior Raphael Marcoux finished with a solid 19.38. Yet, the real battle in the event was between second and third place. Brown’s Cody Cline finished in a time of 19.50, just one hundredth of a second ahead of Yale’s Henry Gaissert (19.51). Coming in fourth, right behind Gaissert, was Jonas Kistorp from Columbia with a time of 19.55. Columbia also snagged fifth place in the event with swimmer Albert Gwo finishing in 19.70. Following behind him was Cornell’s Jack Mahoney with a time of 19.70 landing him in sixth place. Harvard’s Umit Gures posted a time of 19.74 putting him in seventh place. Finally, wrapping up the top eight was Christian Feiler from Princeton touching the wall at 19.86.

Men’s 1-Meter Diving
Switching gears from lane lines to diving boards, Columbia dominated the scoreboard with sophomore Jonathon Suckow earning 377.10 point for the lions. Following behind in second place by 39 points was Princeton’s Colten Young with 338.60 points. With only six points separating third and fourth place, Princeton’s Charile Minns finaled with a score of 316.25, pulling ahead of Yale’s Christian DeVol who scored 310.75 points. Finishing in fifth place was Cornell’s Brett Herbert with 292.10 points. Trailing behind Herbert in sixth place was Harvard’s Alec DeCapiro scoring a total of 286.15 points. Seventh place went to Penn’s John-Michael Diveris who scored 272.85 points, and in eighth place was Cornell’s Jameson Crandell with 259.00 points.

Men’s 200 Free Relay
Harvard’s men are three for three in relay titles as they take home another gold medal in the men’s 200 free relay. The 50 free champion, Marcoux, led off the relay with a split of 19.58. As second leg swimmers entered the water, Brown was able to squeeze by Harvard’s Gures putting them ahead by half a second. Harvard’s third swimmer Grant Goddard split a 19.69 allowing them to make up a bit of time. Dean Farris again played out to be a key swimmer for Harvard in the event as he anchored the relay splitting a time of 18.45, just out-touching second place finishers Brown. Harvard finished in a time of 1:17.29, claiming the new Ivy League meet record with Brown trailing behind in second at 1:17.81. Third place went to Columbia with a time of 1:18.80. Penn grabbed fourth finishing in a time of 1:19.17. Fifth place went to Princeton as they touched the wall at 1:19.22. Yale got sixth place swimming a time of 1:19.28. In seventh place was Cornell with a time of 1:19.99, and wrapping up the top eight was Dartmouth with a time of 1:22.48.
