2019 FINA Swimming World Cup Tokyo: Coleman, Hansson, Pebley Get Top Seeds

The third and final morning of the 2019 FINA Swimming World Cup in Tokyo had nine total events. Some of the world’s best swimmers stayed a few extra weeks in Asia after the World Championships to take advantage of some extra racing before heading into the Olympic year. This was the final preliminary session of the first stop of the 2019 FINA Swimming World Cup. There will be seven stops in total with the next one being next week in China.

Women’s 100 Fly

Sweden’s Louise Hansson had the top time in the 100 fly heats with a 58.34 as she is ahead of Denmark’s Jeanette Ottesen, who is swimming as a new mom. Hansson will be a senior at the University of Southern Cal this fall as she is the two-time reigning NCAA Champion in the 100 fly. Japan’s Ai Soma (59.13) is seeded third.

Men’s 50 Fly

Hungary’s Szebasztian Szabo led the 50 fly heats on Sunday morning at the 2019 FINA Swimming World Cup with a 23.38. Szabo is ahead of world record holder Andrii Govorov of the Ukraine (23.47) and USA’s Michael Andrew (23.58).

Women’s 200 Back

Japan’s Aisa Mataki had a solid morning swim on Sunday at the 2019 FINA Swimming World Cup with a 2:10.68 in the 200 back heats in Tokyo. Mataki is one of six Japanese swimmers in the final as she went 1-2 this morning with Sayaka Akase (2:12.15). Two-time World Champion Emily Seebohm is seeded third as she has already won the 50 and 100 back this weekend. Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu has already won a number of events this weekend as well and she is seeded fifth seed at 2:12.49.

Men’s 100 Back

USA’s Jacob Pebley had the fastest prelims time in the 100 back on Sunday morning at the 2019 FINA Swimming World Cup in Tokyo with a 54.47. Pebley is ahead of a tight field with Canada’s Markus Thormeyer (54.57) sitting in second place while Australia’s Mitch Larkin (54.63) is third. Larkin won the bronze medal in the 100 back at the World Championships last week and also won the 200 IM last night in Tokyo.

Women’s 50 Breast

Jamaica’s Alia Atkinson put up the fastest 50 breast heats swim on Sunday morning at the FINA Swimming World Cup in Tokyo with a 30.32. She was ahead of Belarus’ Alina Zmushka (30.94) and Sweden’s Sophie Hansson (31.34). Hansson will be a sophomore at NC State this fall.

South Africa’s Tatjana Schoenmaker (31.77) and Australia’s Emily Seebohm (31.77) tied for eighth place and will need to have a swim-off for the last spot in the final tonight.

Men’s 200 Breast

Japan has always had a rich tradition in the men’s 200 breaststroke. On Sunday morning at the FINA Swimming World Cup in Tokyo, Japan qualified six swimmers to the eight man final in the 200 breast with Syoma Satou (2:10.43) leading the way. It was a fairly packed prelims session with Ryuya Mura (2:10.59) sitting in second and USA’s Andrew Wilson (2:10.75) in third.

Yasuhiro Koseki (2:11.26) is seeded fourth as he did not qualify to swim this event at World Championships, only swimming the 100 where he finished in fourth.

Belarus’ Ilya Shymanovich, already the winner in the 50 and 100 breast, is the other non-Japanese swimmer in the field.

Women’s 100 Free

Sweden’s Michelle Coleman had the fastest heats time in the 100 free on Sunday morning at the 2019 FINA Swimming World Cup in Tokyo with a 53.97. Coleman is ahead of Cate Campbell, who won the silver medal at World Championships last week, as Campbell was a 54.36. She tied for second with Madison Wilson (54.36). Italy’s Federica Pellegrini finished in fourth at 54.39 for tonight’s final.

Men’s 200 Free

Japan’s Katsuhiro Matsumoto, fresh off a silver medal at World Championships in the 200 free, is the top seed in the men’s 200 free on Sunday morning at the FINA Swimming World Cup in Tokyo with a 1:48.28. Matsumoto won the silver medal after Lithuania’s Danas Rapsys was disqualified for flinching on the start. Rapsys is the second seed here with a 1:48.31. Belgium’s Alexandre Marcourt (1:48.32) is seeded third while Hungary’s Dominik Kozma (1:48.47) and USA’s Blake Pieroni (1:48.77) are fourth and fifth.

Women’s 200 IM

Katinka Hosszu, fresh off a World Championships gold medal in the 200 IM, posted the top time to close out the heats of the 2019 FINA Swimming World Cup with a 2:12.04. Hosszu is seven tenths in front of Japan’s Miho Teramura (2:12.74) and Yui Ohashi (2:13.32). Ohashi was a medal favorite in the 200 IM at Worlds but was disqualified in the final. She rebounded later in the meet to win the bronze medal in the 400.
