2019 Conference USA Championships Day 1: Rice, Florida International Lead

The first finals session of the 2019 Conference USA Championships featured two events including the 200 medley relay and 800 free relay.

Women’s 200 Medley Relay

Florida International University took the first win of the night in the 200 medley relay, edging out Rice University with a 1:38.35. Shaving off 3.32 seconds off of their seed time, senior, Naomi Ruele led off with a 24.44 backstroke, followed by sophomore Sara Gyertyanffy splitting a 27.08 in the breaststroke. To finish off the last 100, sophomore Stephanie Hussey split a 24.12 at the fly and freshman Helga Fodor anchored the the panthers with a 22.71 freestyle.

Rice University took second place (1:38.70), followed by University of North Texas in third (1:40.08), Marshall University (1:40.09), Florida Atlantic University (1:43.58), and Old Dominion taking sixth place with a 1:47.37 from the evening finals.

Women’s 800 Free Relay

Rice University completed the final relay of the night, the 800 free, in first place, tying the lead for points with Florida International University. Rice’s Marta Cano-Minarro, freshman, led off the first 200 free with a 1:45.98, followed by junior, Claire Therien (1:47.85). The final 400 of Rice’s relay stayed strong with sophomore, Ellery Parish (1:46.52), and sophomore, Lindsay Mathys, anchoring the final leg (1:47.42), bringing the team in at a 7:07.77.

Florida International University took second place (7:17.34), followed by Marshall University (7:18.46), University of North Texas (7:19.19), Old Dominion University (7:29.51), and Florida Atlantic University taking sixth place with a (7:31.38).
