2019 Charlotte Ultra: Madison Kennedy Wins 50 Free Shoot-Out
The 2019 Charlotte Ultra Meet continued tonight with the third night of finals at the Mecklenburg Aquatic Club, hosted by SwimMAC, with hometown star Madison Kennedy winning the 50 free shootout. The session featured finals of the men’s and women’s 200 fly, 200 breast, 100 back, and 400 free, as well as the finals of the 50 shoot-out races.
Makayla Sargent, who won the 400 IM last night, won a close 200 fly to start off night three in 2:14.60, just ahead of Amanda Ray who was second in 2:14.84 and Emma Seiberlich in 2:14.89. Zachary Brown won the men’s 200 fly with the only time under 2:00 with a 1:59.16.
Katherine Douglass dropped six seconds from her seed and nearly three seconds from her prelims time to win the 200 breast in 2:28.00. That is the first time the 17-year-old has been under 2:30 in the event.
NC State’s Elise Haan dipped under 1:01 to take the 100 backstroke in 1:00.77, about a half second ahead of teammate Kylee Alons (1:01.36) who has had a busy schedule at this meet. The Wolfpack actually grabbed the top four spots in that event, with Emma Muzzy (1:02.24) and Shannon Kearney (1:02.80) finishing third and fourth. Fellow NC State teammate Coleman Stewart won the 100 back in 54.84.
Eleanore Marquardt followed up on her 800 free win with a victory in the 400 free (4:15.60), while NC State’s Eric Knowles was the only man under 4:00 to win the men’s 400 in 3:58.67.
Adaline Bullock won the women’s 50 fly (27.58), while Nathan Lile grabbed the men’s event (24.28). Haan grabbed a second win in the women’s 50 back (28.44), while the Cavalier’s George Wozencraft (26.33) won the men’s event. Nic Eriksson won the 50 breast in 28.45, while Rachel Bernhardt followed up on her 100 breast win with a 32.24 in the 50 here.
Madison Kennedy emerged victorious in a close 50 free battle, touching just .02 ahead of Maxine Parker, 25.26 to 25.38. Douglass was back in the water to finish third in 25.52 after winning the 200 breast earlier in the session. Lile grabbed his second 50 win with a 22.93 in the men’s 50 free.
