The 2019 Canadian Swimming Trials will continued in Toronto tonight with finals of the 100 back, 200 breast, 50 fly, and the women’s 1500 free and men’s 800 free. This is the qualifying meet for all upcoming major international meets for the Canadian team, including the 2019 World Championships in Gwangju, South Korea.

In order to qualify for Worlds, swimmers must finish in the top 2 of their event and achieve a FINA ‘A’ qualifying standard.

Reigning World Champion Kylie Masse put up the world’s fastest 100 back tonight to improve on her #1 ranked time from the morning and just miss her own national record and end less than 2-tenths off American Kathleen Baker’s world record.

Women’s 100 Back

Kylie Masse improved on her near-world record swim from this morning tonight, touching in 58.16 to drop .03 off her prelims time. That improved her #1 ranked time in the world that unseated Kathleen Baker, was had the previous fastest time for 2019 with a 59.05 in Marseilles. That is just .06 off of Masse’s Canadian record from 2017 Worlds.

Baker now sits at #3 in 2019, as Taylor Ruck powered to a strong second place swim of 58.55 to move to #2 in the world. That improves Ruck’s previous best by about half a second. The duo will definitely be two to watch heading into World Championships this summer, as they give Canada the only two swimmers under 59 seconds in this event so far this year. Also under a minute in third was Jade Hannah (59.89).

Women’s 200 Breast

Kierra Smith, who had the #3 time in the world heading into this meet, initially looked to be the top finisher in this event tonight, but shortly after the finish it was announced she was DQ’ed in the final. Smith was the second seed after prelims with a 2:26.16.

Sydney Pickrem and Kelsey Wog were neck and neck behind Smith, and ended up as the top two finishers after Smith’s DQ. The two were within two-tenths of one another to both drop significantly from this morning. Pickrem ended up taking gold in 2:22.63, while Wog was second in 2:22.82. Those are the #1 and #2 ranked times in the world for this year, knocking off American Annie Lazor who previously held the #1 spot with a 2:22.99.

Both of those times are well under the FINA A standard, giving them both spots on Canada’s World Championship roster. The two were well ahead of the rest of the field, as bronze went to Mary-Sophie Harvey who was nearly five seconds behind (2:27.41).

Women’s 50 Fly

Maggie MacNeil cleared the FINA A standard in the 50 fly to grab the gold and a potential chance to swim this event at the 2019 World Championships, dropping nearly a second from her prelims time to finish first in 26.15. That was still short of Olympic gold medalist Penny Oleksiak’s time from prelims (26.08). Oleksiak ended up scratching this event and did not compete in the finals tonight.

Behing MacNeil on the podium was Haley Black (26.43) and Sadie Fazekas (26.91).

Men’s 50 Fly

William Pisani dropped from prelims to win the men’s 50 fly in 23.57. That time was just under the FINA A standard that will give Pisani a chance to compete in the event at Worlds should he make the Canadian World Championships roster in a different event. He was also just under three-tenths off of Santo Condorelli’s Canadian record of 23.30.

Pisani was the only person in the field under 24 seconds in the event, as Mehdi Ayoubi (24.24) and Alex Perreault (24.34) rounded out the podium.
