The 2019 Australian World Swimming Trials headed into its fifth morning in Brisbane, as some of the nation’s biggest names reconvened for another day of elite competition. With four full days in the books, the Aussie World Championships roster has slowly started to take shape, while the remaining spots grow more coveted and precious.
Boasting a diverse schedule of free and stroke events, along with some multi-class competition, Trials Day Five was prepared to bring the heat, and the athletes surely weren’t going to be left behind.
Mitch Larkin continued to force his name on the scene, nabbing top seed in the men’s 200 back by a wide margin; while Cate Campbell proved to spectators why she is the best Australian women’s 100 freestyler of all time, clocking in at 52.87 just in prelims. A teaser for tonight’s final, this preliminary session was nothing short of spectacular.

Women’s 100 Free
Cate Campbell turned heads in the first event of the morning, as she sealed the top seed and a World Championships qualifying time with a blazing 52.87 in the women’s 100 free. The only woman under 53.00, Campbell defended her honor as the Australian record holder while sending Emma McKeon to the adjacent lane in tonight’s final, despite her stellar 53.06 swim.
Shayna Jack will take the opposite side, turning in a 53.21 for third seed; while Madison Wilson (53.88) and Bronte Campbell (53.93) will battle to defend their spots in the top five. They will need to hold off Leah Neale (55.13) and Holly Barratt (55.14) in the end lanes, as the seventh and eighth seed look to climb in the rankings.

Men’s 200 Back
In true form, Mitch Larkin seized the top seed with relative ease in the men’s 200 back, bettering Jordan Merrilees’ time by nearly a second and a half. The Aussie record holder will be looking to lower that mark tonight, as Bradley Woodward (1:59.97) chases him for the title.
Tristan Hollard will pose an outside threat, clocking in at fourth seed with a time of 2:00.37, only a second and a half superior to Thomas Hauck’s mark of 2:00.90. Spectators can expect Ty Hartwell (2:01.06) to be cranking in the far lane, as he fends off Joshua Edwards-Smith (2:02.22) and Kevin Kalember (2:02.60) for a shot at the top five.
