2019 ACC Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships: NC State Wins Title
NC State Wolfpack won the 2019 ACC Women’s Swimming and Diving Championship in Greensboro with 1,353 points ahead of Virginia (1282) and Louisville (1146). The Wolfpack got wins on Saturday night from Tamila Holub in the 1650, Emma Muzzy in the 200 back and Sophie Hansson in the 200 breast.
NC State won its second ACC title in three years.
Louisville got wins from Mallory Comerford in the 100 free and Grace Oglesby in the 200 fly. Miami got two diving wins tonight with Alicia Blagg in the 1m and David Dinsmore in the platform.

NC State got off to a huge start on Saturday night at the ACC Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships in Greensboro. Taking advantage of zero Virginia swimmers in the 1650, NC State finished first, second, third and fifth in the 1650 as sophomore Tamila Holub (15:56.91) and senior Anna Jahns (15:56.96) battled to the last stroke.
NC State, who started the day ahead by 19 points, is now 131 points ahead of Virginia.
Junior Makayla Sargent (16:06.58) finished in third to complete the sweep as junior Ariel Finke (16:13.39) finished in fifth with her time from earlier in the day.
Louisville’s Sophie Cattermole (16:07.90), North Carolina’s Robyn Dryer (16:15.63), Notre Dame’s Sinead Eksteen (16:18.80) and Georgia Tech’s Emily Ilgenfritz (16:25.33) also placed in the top eight timed final event.

Miami continued to flex its diving muscles as Alicia Blagg won the 1m diving event on Saturday night at the 2019 ACC Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships in Greensboro. Blagg had 329.15 points as the sophomore was joined in the final by fellow Cane Millie Haffety (280.50) as she finished fifth.
NC State picked up 22 valuable points from Madeline Kline (267.50) as she finished in eighth. Virginia had zero divers in the A-Final as the Wolfpack now lead by 137.5 points.
Georgia Tech’s Cami Hidalgo (290.35), North Carolina’s Emily Grund (287.55), Florida State’s Ayla Bonniwell (276.35) and Notre Dame’s Erin Isola (273.20) also competed in the final.

NC State’s Emma Muzzy had an incredible finish in the 200 back on Saturday night at the ACC Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships in Greensboro as she won with a 1:51.66. Virginia’s Megan Moroney (1:51.98) was leading for about 195 yards before Muzzy swam a 28.30 on the final 50 to overtake Moroney’s 29.88 final 50.
Virginia was looking to gain some momentum back after NC State scored huge points in the first two events but NC State swiped it right back. The Wolfpack are still ahead by 106 points.
Virginia finished third and fourth with Emma Sieberlich (1:52.54) and Paige Madden (1:53.18) picking up valuable points for the Hoos.
NC State’s Kate Moore (1:53.26), NC State’s Elise Haan (1:53.71), Duke’s Madeline Hess (1:53.82) and Virginia’s Abigail Richter (1:54.52) also swam in the A-Final.

Louisville senior Mallory Comerford won her third straight ACC title in the 100 free on Saturday night at the ACC Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships with a 46.57. Comerford broke her own ACC meet record in the event that she set last year at 46.65. She still holds the overall conference record of 46.20 from last year’s NCAA Championships.
Comerford finished ahead of 2-time champ this week Morgan Hill of Virginia (47.46) and NC State’s Ky-lee Perry (47.50) as both were just shy of the 47.35 A cut.
Virginia cut down NC State’s lead to 67 points as they also had Eryn Eddy (48.86) finish in eighth place. NC State only had Perry compete in the A-Final.
Virginia Tech’s Joelle Vereb (48.50), Louisville’s Lainey Visscher (48.54), Georgia Tech’s Iris Wang (48.68) and Notre Dame’s Abbie Dolan (48.75) also swam in the final.

NC State freshman Sophie Hansson (2:06.73) picked up her second win of the week at the ACC Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships in Greensboro. Hansson won the 100 last night to be the sixth fastest performer all-time in the event and won the 200 tonight to win NC State’s third event of the night.
Coming home in a flourish was Florida State freshman Nina Kucheran (2:08.78) as she had the fastest last 50 of anyone in the field outside of Hansson. Kucheran came home in a 33.97. Kucheran out-touched two Louisville Cardinals in sophomores Morgan Friesen (2:09.05) and Mariia Astashkina (2:09.30).
NC State extended its lead over Virginia to 72 points as Julia Poole (2:10.15) finished in sixth and sophomore Olivia Calegan (2:12.17) finished in eighth.
Virginia’s Vivian Tafuto (2:09.77) placed fifth for the Cavaliers and North Carolina’s Lillian Higgs (2:10.91) placed seventh for the Tar Heels.

Louisville junior Grace Oglesby used a great back half to win the 200 fly final on Saturday night at the ACC Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships to set the meet record with a 1:52.81. Oglesby broke the ACC meet record that was set in 2015 by Tanja Kylliainen, who was also a Louisville Cardinal. Kylliainen is currently an assistant at the University of Miami.
Oglesby overcame a small deficit from NC State freshman Kylee Alons, who led early at 53.76. Alons faded to fifth at 1:55.33 as NC State officially clinched the team title after that event. NC State is ahead by 69 points heading into the final relay.
Louisville got points from freshman Alena Kraus (1:55.06) as she finished in third behind Notre Dame’s Nicole Smith (1:54.66).
Virginia’s Julia Menkhaus (1:55.16), Notre Dame’s Luciana Thomas (1:56.20), Duke’s Cabell Ann Whitlow (1:56.78) and North Carolina’s Bryanna Cameron (1:57.92) also swam in the A-Final.

Men’s Platform Diving
Miami brought a small team of three men’s divers but they swept the boards at the ACC Swimming and Diving Championships in Greensboro. David Dinsmore, competing in his first meet of the season because of his injury, won the platform with 482.10. Dinsmore went 1-2 with fellow Cane Zach Cooper (413.50).
NC State’s James Brady gave the Wolfpack men momentum heading into next week as he placed third at 376.60.

400 Free Relay
Louisville closed out the ACC Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday night in Greensboro with a win in the 400 free relay at 3:11.63 ahead of NC State (3:12.80) and Virginia (3:12.97).
Lainey Visscher (48.73), Mallory Comerford (46.68), Casey Fanz (48.04) and Arina Openysheva (48.18) won the title for the Cardinals improving on their seed time of 3:13 from the Indiana Invitational.
The quickest splits outside of Louisville were Virginia’s Morgan Hill (47.69), NC State’s Ky-lee Perry (47.69), NC State’s Kylee Alons (47.90) and Duke’s Alyssa Marsh (48.27).
Duke (3:15.35), North Carolina (3:15.67), Notre Dame (3:15.88), Virginia Tech (3:17.29) and Florida State (3:17.31) also competed in the event.
