Men’s 400 IM

18-year-old Jake Foster cruised to the top seed in the 400 IM on Friday morning at the Speedo Winter Junior Nationals East Championships in Greensboro. He swam a 3:44.69 which is a new best time for Foster, who committed to swim for Texas next year. Foster was less than a second off of the 3:43.64 meet record set by Kieran Smith last year.

That meet record will probably come down to Jake and his younger brother Carson Foster, who did not take a hard stroke over the second 200 in his heat swim. Carson is the second seed at 3:47.16 as the winner tonight could be coming home with a new meet record. The two Fosters are also looking to move up on the 17-18 all-time NAG rankings.

Owen Conley was the only other swimmer to break 3:50 as he is the third seed at 3:49.10.

Peyton Werner (3:51.16), Rick Mihm (3:52.18), Tyler Watson (3:53.00), Ian Grum (3:53.17) and Conall Monahan (3:53.80) also qualified for the A-Final.

Women’s 100 Fly

Isabel Ivey of the Windermere Lakers posted the top time in the 100 fly on Friday morning in Greensboro with a 52.24, dropping over three seconds off her entry time. The time was a best for Ivey as she was a 52.61 at Winter Juniors two years ago. The senior is headed to Cal next year.

Ivey is just ahead of Kate Douglass (52.29) of Chelsea Piers and Gretchen Walsh (52.77) of Nashville. Douglass moved up to tied for 31st all-time in the 17-18 NAG rankings with former NCAA champion Olivia Scott from 2011. Ivey moved up to 30th all-time.

15-year-old Gretchen Walsh also lowered her best time as she moved up to 21st all-time in the 15-16 NAG rankings, sitting in a tie with Jasmine Tosky and Danielle Nack.

Behind the top three is a long list of 53’s led by Talia Bates of Gator Swim Club (53.18) and Gabi Albiero (53.21) of Cardinal Aquatics. Albiero came into the meet with the top seed.

Tristen Ulett (53.34), Claire Curzan (53.37) and Christiana Regenauer (53.71) also posted top eight times.

Curzan is currently fourth all-time in the 13-14 NAG rankings as she is chasing the 51.73 by Regan Smith from the 2016 Winter Juniors. That time also stands as the meet record.

Men’s 200 Free

SwimMAC’s John Walker looked long and strong in his heat swim on Friday morning at the Speedo Winter Junior Nationals East Championships in Greensboro. Walker posted a 1:35.86 to lead the qualifiers as he was the only swimmer to break 1:36, and one of just two people to break 1:37. The other to break 1:37 was Jack Wright of Allegheny, who is the second seed at 1:36.92.

Behind Walker, the rest of the field is separated by four tenths of a second as it will be a great race for second tonight. Perhaps that tight race will fuel the field to chase down Walker, who looks like he has more in the tank for finals.

Hugh Svendsen, Walker’s SwimMAC teammate, is the third seed at 1:37.04, while 500 champ Jake Magahey of Swim Atlanta is the fourth seed at 1:37.19. 50 free champ Adam Chaney also qualified for the final, placing in a tie for fifth at 1:37.22. He is in a tie with Julian Hill of Gator Swim Club.

Preston Forst (1:37.25) and Jack Alexy (1:37.36) also qualified for the tight A-Final.

Women’s 100 Breast

Alex Walsh put up a smooth swim in the 100 breast prelims on Friday morning at the Speedo Winter Junior Nationals East Championships with a 59.86. She was the only one to break a minute this morning as it should be her against the clock in the final. Walsh holds the meet record at 58.19 from last year. If she gets close to that, she will challenge the NAG record in the 100 breast for 17-18, which is a 58.10 currently held by Miranda Tucker from 2016. Walsh is temporarily 35th all-time in the 17-18 NAG Rankings, passing 2000 Olympic gold medalist Megan Quann.

The race for second is currently led by Taylor Steele (1:00.63) as she was the only other swimmer to break 1:01 in the prelims. 15-year-old Kaylee Hamblin is the third seed at 1:01.20 as she moved to 51st all-time in the 100 breast in the 15-16 age group, tying her with Ingrid Wall from 2015.

Janessa Mathews (1:01.25), Ella Nelson (1:01.58), Claire Tuttle (1:01.60) and Kasia Norman (1:01.96) also qualified for the A-Final.

14-year-old Zoe Skirboll placed seventh this morning with a 1:01.72, just off her 1:01.47 best time. She is currently 10th all-time in the 13-14 NAG rankings as no 14-year-old has ever broken a minute in the women’s 100 breast.
