2018 Australian Pan Pacific Trials Day 3: McKeown, Campbell, Larkin Set Pool Records

The 2018 Hancock Prospecting Pan Pacific Championship Trials continued Monday at the SA Aquatic & Leisure Centre in Adelaide, with Australia’s best swimmers fighting for a spot on their country’s Pan Pacific Games roster.

Cate Campbell, Kaylee McKeown and Mitch Larkin each won events, setting pool records in the process.

Women’s 100 Free

Cate Campbell bettered her preliminary time by more than a second to win the 100 free, finishing in a pool-record 52.61.

Her time is the third fastest in the world this year. Her sister Bronte Campbell holds a 52.27 from the Commonwealth Games, while Cate herself, swam a 52.37 earlier in the year.

Emma McKeon finished second in 52.35, the eighth-fastest time this year.

Shayna Jack finished third in 54.20, followed by Brianna Throssel (54.69), Madison Wilson (55.09) and Mikka Sheridan (55.61).

Men’s 100 Free

Jack Cartwright surged to victory in the 100 free, winning in 48.33. It wasn’t an overly fast race by the field. Cartwright’s time was not in the top 10 in the world this year.

Alexander Graham took second in 49.05, followed by James Roberts (49.21) and Kyle Chalmers (49.46).

Women’s 200 Fly

One of the few top-level non-Australians competing in the meet, Korea’s An Sehyeon won the 200 butterfly in 2:09.85.

It also was a time not in the top 10 in the world this year, but good enough to beat the rest of the field.

Laura Taylor was second in 2:10.05, followed by Michaela Ryan (2:12.50) and Alice Stuart (2:1.65).

Men’s 200 Fly

Veteran David Morgan used a fast start to crush the field in the 200 fly, winning by nearly a second, despite not being anywhere near the top 10 in the world this year.

Morgan finished in 1:56.98, holding off Nicholas Brown (1:57.71) and Theodoros Benehoutsos (1:58.40), a Greek swimmer who trains in Australia.

Women’s 100 Back

Sixteen-year-old Kaylee McKeown set a pool record to win the 100 backstroke in 59.62, winning the race by nearly a second. Her time is tied for ninth in the world this year. Kylie Masse (58.54) has the top time this year.

Emily Seebohm had the top seed from prelims but did not swim in the finals.

Minna Atherton, 18, was second in 1:00.43, followed by 30-year-old Holly Barratt (1:00.81). Hayley Baker finished in 1:00.91 to take fourth and Sian Whittaker was fifth (1:01.32).

Men’s 100 Back

Make it two pool records in the backstroke. Following McKeown’s in the women’s 100 back, Mitch Larkin held on to his top seed to win the men’s 100 backstroke in 53.66, breaking the pool record.

Larkin’s time puts his race just outside the top 10 in the world this year, though he is fourth at 53.14, a time he achieved at the Commonwealth Games.

Bradley Woodward finished second in 53.89, followed by Tristan Hollard (53.98).

Nineteen-Year-Old Lake Patterson won the 50 freestyle multi-class in 30.87.

Rachael Watson was next at 40.05, followed by 15-year-old Keira Stephens (29.02).
