2017 NJCAA Championships: Indian River Jumps to Early Lead on Day One
Indian River jumped to an early lead on both the men’s and women’s side on day one of the 2017 NJCAA Championships. The Pioneers won 10 of the 11 events swum in night one to kickstart their push towards a new NJCAA Championship title.

Women’s 50 Breast
Indian River started the night off strong with a 1-2 finish in the women’s 50 breast. Courtney Perrett grabbed first with a 29.28, while teammate Lauren Meyrick finished second overall with a 29.47.
Iowa Central’s Ann Marie Spiker picked up the bronze with a 30.95, followed by Southwestern Oregon’s Madeline Cramer’s 32.22.
Iowa Central grabbed fifth with a 32.58 finish from Lexi Quigley, while Indian River’s Taylor Miller added a sixth place finish of 32.97.
South Georgia State’s Delaney Smith and Lynx’s Miranda Kindhart finished seventh and eighth with times of 33.01 and 33.79.

Men’s 50 Breast
Indian River swept the top of the podium with a 1-2-3 finish in the men’s 50 breast.
Andrew Wojcik picked up the gold medal with a 25.33, followed closely teammate Joel Hansson’s 25.53. Jonas Olczyk rounded out the top three with a 25.81, making them the only three athletes beneath the 26-second mark.
Southwestern Oregon’s Chris Broschat grabbed fourth with a 26.26, just ahead of Southern Georgia State’s Kyle Martin’s 26.42.
Iowa Central’s Dylan Van Pletzen (26.66), Lynx’s Oakley Johns (27.63), and Monroe’s Maclain Conner (28.15) rounded out the top eight.

Ianthe van der Westhuisen of Indian River picked up the title in the women’s 1000 free with a final time of 10:22.78. Teammate Madisyn Lyons finished second overall with a 10:28.97.
Megan Mack of Monroe added a third place finish of 11:04.87.

Women’s 200 IM
Natalie Grothe of Indiana River led a 1-2-3 finish for the Pioneers, maintaining her spot atop the podium with a final time of 2:05.95. Teammates Malin Wallen and Morgan Holt grabbed the silver and bronze medals with times of 2:07.04 and 2:08.47 respectively.
Southern Georgia State’s Kiana Ocasio-Molina picked up a fourth place finish of 2:13.61, while Iowa Lakes’ Monique Dias was fifth with a 2:14.15.
Southern Georgia State’s Jessica Dunton (2:14.64), Southwestern Oregon’s Sienna Smith (2:14.46), and Southwestern Oregon’s Angelica Lemus (2:18.49) completed the top eight.

Men’s 200 IM
Hylton Collinson of Iowa Lakes maintained his spot as the top seed in the men’s 200 IM with a final time of 1:49.64, improving upon his prelims time of 1:52.10 by more than two seconds.
Indian River finished second through fourth with top swims by Cameron Newton (1:50.00), Harrison Howerton (1:53.24), and Gabriele Sasia (1:54.65).
Southern Georgia State’s Andrew Brown finished fifth overall with a 1:57.43, just ahead of Iowa Central teammates Dylan Van Pletzen (1:57.47) and Austin Monette-Waters (1:57.80).
Shane Williams of Southwestern Oregon was eighth with a time of 1:58.84.

Osianna McReed and Courtney Stewart of Indian River maintained their spots as the top two seeds in the women’s 50 free with the only sub-24 second finals swims. McReed sprinted to gold with a 23.13 finish, followed by Stewart and her time of 23.85.
Southwestern Oregon’s Anessa Clear picked up third with a 24.16, followed by a tie for fourth. Lynx’s Madi Ewald and Iowa Central’s Sandra Alonso Rivas delivered matching times of 24.50 for fourth.
Sarah Dostie of Indian River finished sixth with a 24.82, while Southern Georgia State’s Nikki Daley was seventh with a 24.84.
Erie’s Tabby Smith took eighth with a 25.35.

Indian River swept the top five spots in the men’s 50 free final, led by Gavin Erdmann. All five Pioneers stopped the clock somewhere along the 20-second mark, with Erdmann claiming gold with a 20.26.
John Fauteux was second with a 20.33, followed by teammates Nicholas Loomis (20.67), Guillaume Bolivard (20.73), and Paul Tobin (20.83).
Iowa Lakes’ Jakub Murici finished sixth overall with a 21.01, while Southern Georgia State’s Zac Elz was seventh with a 21.20.
Lucas Wittmann of Iowa Central rounded out the top eight with a 21.47.

Men’s 3-Meter Diving
The men’s 3-meter diving finals was highlighted by a new NJCAA record by Robby Costine of Indian River. Costine finished with an accumulated 623.65 points to blast past the previous record of 614.50 set in 2008 by IRSC’s Michael Wright.
Teammate Gavrilo Blijden added a second place finish of 519.70, while Herkimer County Community College’s (HCCC) Nicholas Herrlett finished third with a total of 382.15 points.
Lynx teammates Josh Kelch (342.82), Juan Maldanado (313.55), and Andrew Walker (283.95) were fourth through sixth, while Genesee’s Thomas Slenker finished seventh with a total of 269.80.

Women’s 200 Medley Relay
Indian River powered past the competition in timed finals of the women’s 200 medley relay. The relay team of Courtney Stewart (26.59), Courtney Perrett (28.46), Osianna McReed (24.74), and Malin Wallen (23.70) touched first with a 1:43.49, finishing close to ten seconds ahead of the competition.
Jordyn DuBois (29.26), Ann Marie Spiker (30.99), Kailie Valentine (26.80), and Lexi Quigley (26.15) of Iowa Central picked up second with a final time of 1:53.20.
Southwestern Oregon’s Angelica Lemus (30.01), Madeline Cramer (32.34), Sienna Smith (26.98), and Annessa Clear (24.26) rounded out the top three with a combined time of 1:53.59.

Men’s 200 Medley Relay
The Pioneer men followed the women’s success with a second relay gold for Indian River. Jason van der Touw (22.97), Andrew Wojcik (25.08), Nicholas Loomis (20.99), and Gavin Erdmann (19.58) combined to post a first place finish of 1:28.62.
Southwestern Oregon’s Michael Fields (25.29), Christian Broschat (26.22), Carson Rose (23.49), and Thomas Crawford (21.17) turned in a final time of 1:36.17 for second place.
The relay team of Marko Dominovic (26.05), Hylton Collinson (25.63), Keagen Blau (24.08), and Jakub Murici (20.48) from Iowa Lakes finished third overall with a time of 1:36.24.
