Lisa Tixier, Joel Ax Break Meet Records at NAIA National Championships

Two meet records were broken on day three finals of the 2017 NAIA Men’s and Women’s National Swimming and Diving Championships.

Biola’s Lisa Tixier broke the meet record in the women’s 100 fly while SCAD’s Joel Ax beat the previous mark in the men’s 200 free.

Heading into the final day of competition tomorrow, Olivet Nazarene leads both the men and women’s meets.

Women’s 200 Medley Relay

Olivet Nazarene won the first event of the evening by nearly one second. The team of Deirdre Gerke (27.28), Andrea Vega (28.67), Amanda Moran (25.07), and Leanne Latocha (23.23) took gold in 1:44.25.

SCAD’s Julie Henninger (27.50), Sara Lacusky (29.54), Cadie Crow (25.84), and Julie Woody (22.24) finished second in 1:45.12 and Biola’s Rachel Stinchcomb (27.70), Emily Silzel (30.63), Lisa Tixier (23.90), and Rebecca Brandt (24.34) took third in 1:46.57.

Men’s 200 Medley Relay

SCAD won the first men’s event of the evening. The team of Brogan Bunner (23.12), Anton Arvidsson (24.54), Ryan Sweat (22.51), and Joel Ax (19.34) stopped the clock in 1:29.51.

Keiser’s Nick Oh (23.87), Lukas Macek (24.74), Danny Hartley (21.70), and Andrei Stukov (19.88) took second in 1:30.19 and Olivet Nazarene’s Magnus Poulsen (22.92), Guilherme Magnoler (25.14), Magnus Andersen (21.93), and Vladislav Khoroleetc (20.29) finished third in 1:30.28.

Women’s 400 IM

Olivet Nazarene’s Tiffany Ray swept the IM events this weekend by taking the 400 IM title tonight. The senior dropped four seconds from her morning time to finish in 4:25.90. This is her second individual NAIA National Championship title in her career.

SCAD’s Rebecca Justus finished second in 4:28.83 and Cumberlands’ Christina Klouda finished third in 4:30.35.

Olivet Nazarene’s Hayley Ronci (4:31.90), Brenau’s Courtney Hayward (4:31.95), College of Idaho’s Mckayla Stevens (4:36.35), Erika Roller (4:36.58), and Biola’s Sophia Dammann (4:39.70) rounded out the top eight.

Men’s 400 IM

Olivet Nazarene swept the 400 IM tonight as Daniil Kuzmin took the title in 3:55.88. The sophomore dropped an additional three seconds from his prelim time to gold for the second-straight year.

Lindenwood-Belleville’s Nico Tscherner took silver in 3:58.05 and Asbury’s Keith Jessee took bronze in 4:02.52.

Olivet Nazarene’s Charles Bennett (4:03.76), Cumberlands’ Ivar de Jong (4:03.86), Cumberlands’ Joel Westerlind (4:04.81), Lindenwood-Belleville’s Niels Engeln (4:09.04), and College of Idaho’s Thomas Sheridan (4:12.84) also swam in the A-Final.

Women’s 100 Fly

Biola’s Lisa Tixier set a new NAIA National Championship meet record in the 100 fly. The junior posted a time of 53.70 for the win en route to defending her title. Her time broke the previous record of 54.25 set back in 2015 by her sister Christine Tixier.

Olivet Nazarene’s Amanda Moran finished second in 55.82 and SCAD’s Lydia Reinhardt took third in 57.44.

SCAD’s Cadie Crow (57.95), Olivet Nazarene’s Kara DeLong (57.99), College of Idaho’s Madison Kelly (58.12), Asbury’s Claire Goodrum (58.19), and Biola’s Samantha Dammann (59.00) also swam in the top eight.

Olivet Nazarene’s Magnus Poulsen won his first of two events during tonight’s final session. The freshman won his first NAIA National Championship title with a time of 47.63.

Wayland Baptist’s Josiah Morales swam to second in 48.72 and Keiser’s Danny Hartley took third in 48.99

Women’s 200 Free

SCAD’s Abigail Richey won her second-consecutive NAIA National title in the women’s free, finishing with a time of 1:52.21. The sophomore finished less than two-tenths ahead of the runner-up.

Second place went to Keiser’s Rachel Munschauer in 1:52.40 and third went to SCAD’s Julie Henninger in 1:52.58.

Olivet Nazarene’s Deirdre Gerke (1:53.23), Morningside’s Suzanna Gonzalez (1:54.08), SOKA’s Taylor Karnilaw (1:54.18), Lindsey Wilson’s Jessica Macdonald (1:54.51), and Cumberlands’ Brittany Litke (1:54.91) also swam in the A-Final.

SCAD’s Joel Ax led the race from start to finish en route to breaking his own NAIA National Championship meet record he set last year by .01. The senior posted a time of 1:34.89.

Ax’s teammate Joel Thatcher finished second in 1:36.12 and Olivet Nazarene’s Joshua Bouma took third in 1:39.74.

Keiser’s Wyatt Engler (1:39.96), Lindenwood-Belleville’s Tim Schmalzreich (1:40.70), Cumberlands’ Alex Zolotukhin (1:41.49), Lindsey Wilson’s Iker Larzabal (1:41.57), and SOKA’s Michael Nunn (1:42.39) rounded out the top eight.

Women’s 100 Breast

SCAD’s Sara Lacusky dropped nearly another second from her prelim time to win the 100 breast in 1:03.25. The sophomore had the fastest second 50 split of the field to win by over one second.

Olivet Nazarene’s Andrea Vega finished second in 1:04.31 while Lindsey Wilson’s Ronni Borders took a close third in 1:04.62.

SCAD’s Emily Rozar (1:06.47), SCAD’s Emilia Rittenbach (1:06.82), SCAD’s Alle Ragland (1:06.88), WVU Tech’s Kendra Monnin (1:07.10), and Biola’s Emily Silzel (1:07.46) completed the A-Final.

Men’s 100 Breast

Keiser’s Lukas Macek was the only swimmer under 55 seconds, winning the 100 breast in a time of 54.66. This is the freshman’s first NAIA National Championship title.

Women’s 100 Back

Olivet Nazarene’s Amanda Moran won the 100 back to defend her title. Last year’s NAIA Female Swimmer of the Year swam the race in 55.19 to take the NAIA National Championship crown for the second-straight year.

SCAD’s Julie Woody touched second in 55.70 and Columbia College’s Megan Monahan finished third in 57.35.

Saint Andrews’ Xiomara Getrouw (57.61), Brenau’s Lindsay Dowling (57.74), SCAD’s Julie Henninger (57.97), Columbia College’s Cydney Donnelly (58.13), and Loyola’s Nina Mantich (58.93) also swam in the A-Final.

Men’s 100 Back

Olivet Nazarene’s Magnus Poulsen won his second race of the night, this time in the 100 back. The freshman won by two-tenths, posting a time of 49.22 not too long after his win in the 100 fly.

Keiser’s Danny Hartley finished second in 49.42 and Saint Andrews’ Georgi Krastev finished a close third in 49.50.

SCAD’s Brogan Bunner (49.66), Wayland Baptist’s Nico Ruiz-Rojas (50.00), Olivet Nazarene’s Vladislav Khoroletc (50.77), Lindsey Wilson’s Clemens Paetzold (50.87), and Asbury’s Clay Bisher (51.78) rounded out the top eight.
