2016 USA Swimming Olympic Trials: Day 2 Prelims Live Recap

Women’s 100m Back

University of Georgia standout Olivia Smoliga entered as the fastest American this year with a world’s sixth 59.41 swum earlier this month in Indianapolis. This morning she swam a 59.65 for the top seed.

Amy Bilquist of Cal posted a 59.67 to launch her to a tie for tenth in the world this year with Hannah Stevens and to enter semifinals as the second seed. Stevens of the University of Missouri went a 59.72 this morning, just slower than her world’s tenth 59.67.

Ali Deloof was under world record pace at the 50 meter mark, and came home in 1:00.09 to take the fourth seed.

Missy Franklin entered with a 59.80, thev13th best in the world this year. Swimming in the second circle seeded heat Franklin posted a 1:00.35 for fifth.

Michigan’s Clara Smiddy earned the sixth seed in 1:00.38.

The first woman ever under a minute, Natalie Coughlin, did not quite break the barrier this morning but posted a 1:00.75 for the seventh seed.

2015 World Championships team member, Kathleen Baker tied for eighth with 16 year old Grace Ariola in 1:00.79.

Lucie Nordmann (1:00.80), Tasija Karosas (1:01.06), Danielle Galyer (1:01.07), Regan Smith (1:01.17), Alex Walsh (1:01.20), Annie Ochitwa (1:01.25), and Taylor Garcia (1:01.32) also earned semifinals swims.

2012 Olympian Rachel Bootsma did not make the semifinals after finishing 18th in 1:01.34.

Swimming with a broken hand, fourth seed Claire Adams ended up 45th (1:02.46) despite her valiant effort.

Men’s 200m Freestyle

Conor Dwyer entered with the world’s third best time this year of 1:45.41. This morning he swam a 1:46.66 to take the top seed.

Jack Conger posted a 1:47.25 to return to tonight’s semifinals in second.

Texas’ Clark Smith won the first circle seeded heat with a strong back half. He stopped the clock in 1:47.68, good for the third seed. His teammate and 2016 NCAA Champion in the yards edition of this event, Townley Haas swam a 1:47.74 for fourth.

Battling a groin injury suffered yesterday, Ryan Lochte posted a 1:47.77 for fifth. Georgia’s Gunnar Bentz was a 1:47.86 good for sixth.

Blake Pieroni will return seventh with his 1:47.93.

After scratching last night’s 400 IM, Tyler Clary earned the eighth seed from lane 0. He touched in 1:48.11 this morning.

Reed Malone (1:48.24), Michael Weiss (1:48.28), Zane Grothe (1:48.29), Michael Wynalda (1:48.30) and Michael Klueh (1:48.48) finished ninth through 13th.

Junior world record holder Maxime Roney made a statement in the first 100 of the circle seeded heat, but faded to sixth in his heat with a 1:48.57, over a second from his 1:47.10 record. He will get a second swim in 14th.

After qualifying for Rio in the 400 freestyle last night, Connor Jaeger swam a 1:48.59 for 15th. Jonathan Roberts rounds out tonight’s semifinals in 1:48.63.

Women’s 100m Breaststroke

Lilly King was dominant in this event in yards this spring and entered today with the world’s second fastest time this year of 1:05.73. This morning she touched in 1:06.45 to take the top seed.

Katie Meili came in with the fastest seed time. She jumped out to an early lead in the final circle seeded heat and came home in a 1:06.57, just off her world’s tenth best 1:06.46.

Sarah Haase popped a 1:06.31 earlier this month, good for seventh in the world this year. She pushed Meili and earned the third seed in 1:07.04.

American and US Open record holder Jessica Hardy swam a 1:07.16 for fourth. Louisville’s Andee Cottrell claimed fifth overall with a 1:07.21.

Molly Hannis of Tennessee Aquatics entered with the world’s fifth best time in the world this year (1:06.16). She changed her tempo at the end and charged into the wall with a 1:07.27 to claim the sixth seed.

2012 200 breaststroke Olympian Micah Lawrence touched second in the first circle seeded heat with a 1:07.35. Lawrence will return as the seventh seed. Fellow 2012 Olympian Breeja Larson will be eighth tonight after a prelims time of 1:07.37.

Melanie Margalis touched in 1:07.85 for for ninth. Annie Lazor (1:07.89), Katharine Ross (1:07.94), Olivia Anderson (1:08.14), and Notre Dame post grad Emma Reaney (1:08.24) finished ninth through 13th.

Last night’s third place finisher in the 400 IM Bethany Galat was 14th with a 1:06.46. Miranda Tucker (1:08.49) and Allie Raab (1:08.54) complete the semifinals.

Men’s 100m Backstroke

David Plummer posted the fastest time in the world this year with a 52.40 earlier this month. Today he touched in 53.22 for the top seed.

Jacob Pebley put together the world’s 17th best time earlier this month. He moved up to 15th this morning with a 53.48.

Seventeen year old Michael Taylor of Dynamo posted a 53.77, nearly a second drop from his 54.62.

Ryan Murphy arrived in Omaha with the world’s third best time of 52.57. This morning he swam over a second slower in 53.84, though still good for fourth.

Matt Grevers was seeded in a world’s 12th 53.35. Swimming in his fifth Olympic Trials the 2012 Olympic gold medalist looked very in control as he posted a 53.98 for the fifth seed.

Sean Lehane touched in 54.49 and Jake Taylor swam a 54.50 for seventh.

Eugene Godsoe grabbed the eighth seed in 54.74. John Shebat (54.91), Patrick Mulcare (54.94) and Taylor Dale (54.95) finished ninth through 11th. Justin Ress and Ryan Harty tied for 12th in 55.00. Hennessey Stuart (55.40) was the last swimmer to secure his semifinal swim.

Austin Katz, Cameron Craig, and Carter Griffin all tied for 15th in 55.41, leaving us with a three way swim-off for the final two spots in the semifinals.

**Swim-Off Update:

Griffin (55.41) and Katz (55.44) got the last two spots in tonight’s semifinal. Craig was just behind in 55.75.

Women’s 400 Freestyle

Katie Ledecky and Leah Smith entered this event with the top two times in the world this year.

Ledecky split a 1:59.03 at the halfway mark. She seemingly eased off in the back half, and remained in control, finishing in 4:02.62.

Swimming in the first circle seeded heat, Smith touched in 4:03.14, just faster than her second best 4:03.33 swum in Indianapolis earlier this month.

Olympic silver medalist Allison Schmitt swam on Smith’s hip and posted a 4:06.66 for the third seed for tonight’s final. Her North Baltimore training partner Cierra Runge was fourth in 4:07.12.

UNC Chapel Hill graduate and Mission Viejo Nadador Stephanie Peacock returns fifth tonight with a 4:08.23. Lindsay Vrooman of Badger Swim Club finished sixth in 4:08.35.

Hannah Cox of Upper Valley was this morning’s seventh fastest swimmer in 4:09.83. Hannah Moore of NC State posted a 4:10.52 to grab the final spot in finals.

What happened to Lauren Pitzer who finished 16th with a time of 4:12.14???
