2016 NCAA Division II Nationals: Day 3 Prelims Live Recap
Many fast swims and one new DII record highlighted day 3 prelims of the 2016 NCAA Division II National Championships in Indianapolis. Queens’ Dion Dreesens clipped the men’s 500 free record with a time of 4:20.70. He’ll have another chance to break it again as the top seed in the event.
The Queens women had a strong morning, qualifying ten swimmers for tonight’s finals. Of those ten, seven will swim in an A Final. Wingate qualified six swimmers for finals, and Wayne State, Drury, and UC-San Diego all have four swimmers racing again tonight.
Florida Southern, who currently sits in third on the men’s side, had a huge morning by qualifying seven swimmers for finals. Current leader Queens also qualified seven swimmers, and Lindenwood will have five swimmers coming back to race tonight.

Queens’ Patricia Castro Ortega, who has already had a record-breaking meet, is the top seed heading into tonight’s final. She posted a time of 4:46.77 and will aim to break her own DII record of 4:40.65.
Grand Valley’s Leonie Van Noort took second in 4:52.93 and Cal Baptist’s Christina Halverson finished third in 4:53.49.
Drury’s Megan Ouhl (4:53.97), West Chester’s Theresa Hayward (4:54.50), Nova Southeastern’s Emma Wahlstrom (4:54.90), Queens’ Meredith Boudreaux (5:54.97), and Drury’s Sarah Pullen (4:55.21) completed the top eight.

Men’s 500 Free
After crushing the 200 free record last night, Queens’ Dion Dreesens clipped the men’s 500 DII record this morning. His time of 4:20.70 was just under the previous record of 4:20.98 set by his teammate Nick Arakelian last year at this meet. The two teammates will look to battle it out for the win tonight.
Arakelian took second in 4:23.31 and West Chester’s Victory Polyakov was third in 4:24.69.
Saint Leo’s Daniel Bis (4:25.14), Simon Fraser’s Adrian VanderHelm (4:25.51), Missouri S&T’s Jon Glaser (4:25.51), Simon Fraser’s Mackenzie Hamill (4:26.17), and Indy’s Vitor Botana (4:26.35) round out the top eight.

Wingate’s Viktoriya Arkhipova is the top seed in tonight’s A Final after dropping over one second from her seed time. She posted a time of 53.76.
Findlay’s Jessica Ward took second in 54.70 and Queens’ Hannah Peiffer was third in 54.94.
MSU Mankato’s Cecilia Hake (55.02), LIU Post’s Seren Jones (55.07), Mesa’s Mary Saiz (55.18), Truman State’s Evyn Spencer (55.28), and Bridgeport’s Yekaterina Gakhokidze (55.36) will also swim in the top eight.

Queens’ Rostyslav Fedyna dropped over one second from his seed time to take the top seed in 52.90.
Nova Southeastern’s Anton Lobanov, the current DII record holder in this event, took second in 53.05. Fresno Pacific’s Maksim Shcherbakov was third in 53.21.
Delta State’s Alexander Peach (53.32), Delta State’s Matteo Fraschi (53.32), Bloomsbury’s Jake Harner (53.74), and Florida Southern’s Sean Kim (53.93) will also compete in the A Final. Queens’ Ben Mayes (53.74) won the swimoff for the eight spot.

UC-San Diego’s Darielle Watkins took the top spot in 1:59.18. She was the only swimmer under 2 minutes this morning.
Wingate’s Sofia Petrenko was second in 2:00.11 and Queens’ Josephina Lorda took third in 2:00.27.
Queens’ Mckenzie Stevens (2:00.72), LIU Post’s Joyce Kwok (2:00.81), Lindenwood’s Hannah Vinyard (2:01.77), Jewell’s Christina Meredith (2:02.34), and Simon Fraser’s Lauren Swistak (2:02.45) rounded out the top eight.

Men’s 200 Fly
Grand Valley’s Gianni Ferrero, who won the 100 fly last night, took first in the 200 this morning in efforts to sweep both fly events. He posted a time of 1:45.39.
Nova Southeastern’s Thiago Sickert was second in 1:45.76 and Findlay’s Janko Radmanovic was third in 1:46.99.
UC-San Diego’s Kevin Wylder (1:47.41), West Chester’s Eric Long (1:47.60), Wayne State’s Rasmus Olsen (1:47.75), Lindenwood’s Cristian Vasquez (1:48.12), and Cal Baptist’s Joshua Hanson (1:48.13) will also swim in the top eight.
