2016 NCAA Division II Nationals: Day 1 Finals Live Recap
It was a fast start to the 2016 NCAA Division II Nationals. Queens’ Patricia Castro Ortega lowered her own DII record in the women’s 200 IM again, and Lindenwood’s Serghei Golban set a new record in the men’s 50 free.
The Queens women already have a sizable lead ahead of Drury and Wingate after day one. Despite a relay DQ this morning, Queens still leads on the men’s side, followed by Lindenwood and Nova Southeastern.

Cal Baptist’s Christina Halverson won the first final of the evening in 9:51.96. The sophomore dropped over ten seconds from her seed time and was just off the DII record.
Grand Valley’s Leonie Van Noort had a strong finish to take second in 9:52.51. Lindenwood’s Alecia Macgillivray, who won this event last year, took third in 9:57.76.
West Chester’s Theresa Hayward (9:58.13), Lindenwood’s Kyleigh Troxel (9:59.45), Queens’ Mckenzie Stevens (10:00.04), Drury’s Sarah Pullen (10:00.11), and UC-San Diego’s Reagan Eickert (10:08.21) completed the top eight.

Swimming out of lane 1, Queens’ Dion Dressens dominated the event, winning by nearly five seconds. The junior’s time of 9:01.79 was over 12 seconds faster than his seed time.
Queens’ Nick Arakelian, who swam in the morning heats, placed second in 9:06.31. Drury’s Alex Reinbrecht took third in 9:06.63.
Saint Leo’s Daniel Bis (9:11.15), Simon Fraser’s Mackenzie Hamill (9:11.69), Mesa’s Sam Bryant (9:12.33), Lindenwood’s Cristian Vasquez (9:13.23), and UC-San Diego’s Chandler Pourvahidi (9:13.77) rounded out the top eight.

West Florida’s Theresa Michalak took second in 1:58.11 and Wingate’s Sofia Petrenko finished third in 1:59.01.

Tampa’s Marisa Barton took second in 22.89 and Queens’ Kyrie Dobson finished third in 23.01.

Lindenwood’s Serghei Golban had a fast start and strong underwaters to win in 19.35, setting a new DII record. The sophomore broke the previous record by .04 set back in 2011.
Drury’s Daniel Rzadkowski finished second in 19.67 and Saint Leo’s Matheus Assis (19.71) took third in 19.71.
Tampa’s Martin Hammer (19.72), Nova Southeastern’s Thiago Sickert (19.80), Drury’s Rodrigo Caceres (19.83), Queens’ Zack Phelps (19.93), and Queens’ Ben Mayes (20.15) completed the top eight.

Women’s 3m Diving
After qualifying first during prelims, West Florida’s Monica Amaral won the event with a score of 550.20. The junior’s final score was 34 points better than the previous DII record set back in 1994.
Wayne State’s Elizabeth Rawlings took second with 527.25 and Grand Valley’s Taylor Wiercinski placed third with 522.25. Both divers were also better than the old DII record.
Clarion’s Sarah Zerfoss (472.70), Clarion’s Christina Sather (472.15), Bentley’s Nicola Mancini (471.30), Northern Michigan’s Molly Kearney (436.55), and Lindenwood’s Shelby Werkema (434.90) rounded out the top eight.

Women’s 200 Medley Relay
Wingate’s Rita Koryukova (25.64), Jessika Weiss (28.49), Dumur (23.29), and Ana Fish (22.48) upset current DII record holder Queens to win in 1:39.90.
Queens’ Hannah Peiffer, Michelle Prayson, Jessica Parmenter, and Dobson took second in 1:40.14 after setting the DII record last month. Wayne State’s Brenna Gabrielson, Emily Heitchue, Abigail Johns, and Bueno Estrada finished third in 22.67.
Drury (1:40.51), LIU Post (1:41.19), Delta State (1:41.64), UC-San Diego (1:42.79), and West Florida (1:44.30) also competed in the top eight.
