Murphy topped prelims with a 1:37.80. That’s the sixth-fastest effort all time.

Men’s 400 free relay
NC State topped qualifying in the men’s 400-yard free relay, while Texas’s B squad just made it into the championship heat at the 2016 NCAA Division I Men’s Championships.
NC State’s Ryan Held (41.79), Simonas Bilis (40.76), Andreas Schiellerup (42.72) and Soeren Dahl (42.09) raced to the top seed in 2:47.36. The Wolfpack is looking to win its first NCAA relay title in program history.
Florida’s Caeleb Dressel (41.54), Jan Switkowski (42.25), Mark Szaranek (42.77) and Corey Main (42.14) qualified second in 2:48.70, while California’s Justin Lynch (42.83), Trent Williams (42.25), Tyler Messerschmidt (42.90) and Ryan Murphy (41.69) turned in a third-seeded 2:49.67.
Indiana (2:50.10), Auburn (2:51.01), Georgia (2:51.29) and Alabama (2:51.30) qualified fourth through seventh, while Texas’ Townley Haas (42.43), Matt Ellis (43.29), Tate Jackson (43.20) and John Murray (42.48) just barely made finals in 2:51.40. Texas pulled off the top-eight qualification without Jack Conger, Joseph Schooling or Brett Ringgold participating this morning. The Longhorns should have a lot more speed tonight.
