Men’s 200 free relay
Florida’s Caeleb Dressel lit up prelims with the second-fastest 50-yard free of all time, while NC State led the way in the men’s 200-yard free relay qualifying at the 2016 NCAA Division I Men’s Championships.
NC State’s Simonas Bilis (18.76), Ryan Held (18.65), Joe Bonk (19.45) and Andreas Schiellerup (18.89) raced their way to the top seed in 1:15.75. Bilis moved up to ninth all time in the men’s 50 free with that leadoff.
NC State is looking to win its first NCAA relay title in team history. The team has some time to drop, however, to break the NCAA record of 1:14.08 set by Auburn during the techsuit-fueled 2009 NCAA Championships.
Texas’ Matt Ellis, Brett Ringgold, Jack Conger and John Murray raced their way to the second seed in 1:15.84. The Longhorns are looking for their sixth victory in this event’s history. They trail only Auburn (9) and Stanford (9) for the most program victories.
Dressel, who set the NCAA and American record with an 18.23 during the Southeastern Conference Championships, turned in a blistering 18.32 to lead the way for Florida. That’s the second-fastest 50 free ever. Dressel, Corey Main, Mark Szaranek and Jack Blyzinskyj qualified third in 1:16.25.

Men’s 500 free
In a preliminary stunner, defending champion Clark Smith of Texas went out a bit too fast and could not hang on as he took 21st in the men’s 500-yard free at the 2016 NCAA Division I Men’s Championships.
Smith, who clinched the NCAA title last year with a 4:09.72, added more than seven seconds to his time from last year with a 4:17.17 to miss finals completely. It will be up to Townley Haas to defend the title for Texas as the super freshman qualified third in 4:12.68. Haas is on fire so far this meet, posting the fastest 200-yard free split of all time last night with a 1:30.52.
Florida’s Mitch D’Arrigo topped qualifying with a time of 4:11.48. D’Arrigo, who is the 14th-fastest swimmer ever in the event, is looking to become just the third Gator ever to win the event.
Previous Florida Winners:
1986 Matt Cetlinski, Florida, 4:15.19
2010 Conor Dwyer, Florida, 4:13.64
South Carolina’s Akaram Mahmoud, meanwhile, could make history as the Gamecocks’ first NCAA champion after qualifying second in 4:12.59.
Michigan’s Andres Nielsen (4:12.77), Stanford’s Liam Egan (4:13.52), Southern California’s Reed Malone (4:13.59), Wisconsin’s Matthew Hutchins (4:13.74) and NC State’s Anton Ipsen (4:13.97) also made the top eight.

Men’s 50 free
Florida’s Caeleb Dressel unleashed the second 18.2 in history as he nearly beat his NCAA, American record in the men’s 50-yard free at the 2016 NCAA Division I Men’s Championships.
Dressel, who earlier already clocked an 18.32 on relay duty, blasted an 18.29 in prelims. That’s just off his 18.23 record as the fastest 50 free ever.
Dressel now has the top four performances of all time, all within the time frame of a month and a half. He started out with an 18.39 during prelims at the Southeastern Conference Championships last month, and has now has the only four sub-18.40 times in history.

Dressel, who won the 50 free last year in 18.67, is looking to join a long list of multiple 50 free winners. As a sophomore this year, a win by Dressel would keep him on the path to making history as no one has ever accomplished a career sweep of the event.

Several other swimmers will attempt to dethrone Dressel. NC State’s Simonas Bilis, who moved to ninth all time with an 18.76 relay leadoff earlier in the morning, posted an 18.79 for the second seed in the individual event.
Michigan’s Paul Powers also cleared 19 with an 18.99 for the third seed. He is ranked 14th all time with an 18.85 from Big Tens last month.
NC State’s Ryan Held (19.01), Missouri’s Michael Chadwick (19.06), Georgia’s Michael Trice (19.16) and Texas’ John Murray (19.17) also safely made it into finals.
Auburn’s Peter Holoda, Texas’ Brett Ringgold and Alabama’s Kristian Gkolomeev set up a threeway swimoff for eighth with 19.18s.
Gkolomeev, the 2014 50 free victor alongside Brad Tandy in a tie, won the swimoff in 19.04. Ringgold (19.09) and Holoda (19.13) wound up moving to the B final.
