Joao Gomes Jr. Blasts 100 Breast Prelims With 59.06 in Brazil

Brazilian swimmers are fighting for FINA A cuts to get a chance at making the Olympic team.
Men’s 400 IM
In the first event in the Olympic venue, Kakeru Murata posted a 4:23.83 to lead the way in prelims. Leonardo Coelho took second this morning with a 4:23.87.
Brandonn Almeida qualified third in 4:24.97 with Caio Rodrigues taking fourth in 4:29.93.
China’s Wang Yizhe (4:30.38), Leonardo Calice (4:31.61), Icaro Pereira (4:33.57), and Marcelo Pereira (4:35.80) comprised the rest of the top eight.
Women’s 100 fly
Daiene Dias put up the top time of the morning in the 100 fly with a 58.04. Etiene Medeiros qualified second in 58.49, while Katarina Listopadova also cleared 59 with a third-seeded 58.99. Dias and Medeiros both cleared the FINA A Cut in the event.
Daynara Ferreira (59.01), Bruna Lemos (59.45), Li Shuang (59.91), Natalia De Luccas (1:00.07) and Barbora Misendova (1:00.35) closed out the rest of the top eight.
Men’s 400 free
Lucas Kanieski claimed the top time of prelims with a 3:53.61. That’s still well off the FINA A cut of 3:50.40.
Miguel Valente qualified second in a time of 3:54.29 with Giovanny Lima taking third in 3:54.50.
Fernando Scheffer (3:55.56), Marcos Ferrari (3:56.12), Martin Carrizo (3:56.42), Alexandre Finco (3:56.45) and Guilherme Costa (3:57.15) also made the top eight.
Women’s 400 IM
Joanna Maranhao earned the top seed with a time of 4:46.54. She is already the top swimmer in Brazil with a 4:41.82 from earlier in the season which should qualify her for the Olympics.
Barbora Zavadova qualified second in 4:48.16 with Haruno Ito taking third in 4:50.59.
Virginia Bardach (4:50.85), Bruna Primati (4:51.58), Florencia Perotti (4:52.05), Gabrielle Goncalves (4:52.07) and Nathalia Almeida (4:55.94) comprised the top eight.
Men’s 100 breast
Joao Gomes Jr. put up the highlight swim of the morning with a near-Brazilian record time of 59.06 in the men’s 100-meter breast.
Gomes Jr. moved to second in the world behind only Adam Peaty’s 58.41 from the British Championships. His time nearly cleared Henrique Barbosa’s Brazilian record of 59.03 set at the techsuit-fueled 2009 Maria Lenk Trophy meet.
Two other swimmers also cleared 1:00 this morning as Felipe Franca clocked a 59.56 for second overall, moving to fourth in the world in the process. Pedro Cardona took third this morning with a 59.77, moving up to 10th in the world with his swim.
Felipe Lima (1:00.06), Felipe Monni (1:00.68), Raphael Oliveira (1:00.90), Diego Prado (1:01.45) and Henrique Marques (1:01.67) also made the top eight.
