The 6A Georgia High School State Championships for Swimming and Diving are set to start today, beginning with diving afternoon and swimming preliminaries Friday and finals Saturday evening. Both women and men will be competing at the Georgia Tech Campus, and one look at the psych sheet has us all prepared for some quick swims.
As always, relays are key in this format, so keep an eye out for swimmers laying it all out on the line for their school. Walton High School is looking strong, seeded first in both the 200 and 400 Freestyle Relays. The 200 Medley Relay however is looking to be a much tighter match up with the top three seeded teams within a second of each other. Addie Bullock, a freshman from Kennesaw Mountain High School, is ranked first in the 100 Butterfly and second in the 200 IM.
On the men’s side, Walton High School enters this meet as the two time defending state champions. They have some work and fast swimming ahead of them, as they are only ranked first in the 200 Medley Relay. In the individual format the sprints look, as always, like a close and fun event. Colin Riley from Lassiter High School is ranked first in the 100 Freestyle by a mere two hundredths, and less than two tenths away from top seed in the 50 Free, behind Norcross High School’s Senior Eric Strickland. Others to watch out for include Taylor Delk from Collins Hill High School. He is the top seed in the 100 Backstroke, as well as the 500 Freestyle, ahead of the second seed by more than eight seconds.
As all teams travel to Atlanta with their school pride on the line, it is inevitable that we will see some inspiring swims!
The meet starts today with diving at 1 PM and Prelims and Finals at 6 PM, Thursday and Friday. Tickets are 12 dollars per day.
Get ready to see some quick swims!
