The NCAA Division I Women’s Championships concluded an incredible morning of action with Georgia and California definitely setting up a fun night this evening.
Virginia’s Leah Smith turned in a scorching NCAA record in the 500-yard free for the top swim of the morning.
The Georgia Bulldogs should be in the lead after night one as Jack Bauerle’s squad demonstrated it is the deepest freestyle squad in the nation with a total of 13 scoring swims setup for tonight, including 10 A finals.
California, the early favorite with the most overall qualifiers coming into the meet, set themselves up with seven A finalists and two B finalists.
Texas A&M had a really strong morning as well with two A finalists and five B finalists.

There is a high likelihood that the NCAA record of 1:26.20 set by Arizona in 2009 is going to fall this evening as a pair of squads hit the wall in 1:26 this morning.
Wisconsin’s Ivy Martin (21.62), Chase Kinney (21.60), Aja Van Hout (21.74) and Anne Tamblyn (21.90) paced qualifying with a sizzling 1:26.86. Wisconsin is looking for its first win in the 200 free relay ever.
Georgia’s Madeline Locus (21.93), Chantal Van Landeghem (21.23), Olivia Smoliga (21.72) and Lauren Harrington (22.06) put up a second-seeded time of 1:26.94. Georgia has won the title five times as a program, but not for 10 years with the last win coming in 2005.
Stanford’s Simone Manuel (21.87), Lia Neal (21.57), Janet Hu (22.00) and Ally Howe (21.80) rounded out the top three qualifiers in 1:27.24. Stanford is the defending champion with a 1:26.23 to top the event last year.
Notably, Louisville’s Kelsi Worrell absolutely destroyed her leg for the Cardinals with a 21.04, which was good enough to get the team into the A final with an eighth-place 1:28.05.

[table “” not found /]Women’s 500 free
Virginia’s Leah Smith unleashed an NCAA record in the women’s 500-yard free at the NCAA Division I Women’s Championships.
Smith threw down an epic time of 4:30.37 for the top time in her heat in qualifying.
Smith’s splits:
24.86, 51.35 (26.49), 1:18.49 (27.14), 1:45.73 (27.24), 2:13.24 (27.51), 2:40.76 (27.52), 3:08.45 (27.69), 3:36.08 (27.63), 4:03.69 (27.61), 4:30.37 (26.68).
That time lowered the previous NCAA record of 4:31.90 set by California’s Cierra Runge last month at the Pacific 12 Championships.
Runge’s splits:
24.91, 51.63 (26.72), 1:18.81 (27.19), 1:46.04 (27.22), 2:13.64 (27.60), 2:41.33 (27.69), 3:09.36 (28.03), 3:36.98 (27.62), 4:04.80 (27.82), 4:31.90 (27.10)
Smith now stands second all time behind only Katie Ledecky’s American and U.S. Open record of 4:26.58 from last month while swimming for Stone Ridge High School.
Ledecky’s splits:
24.94, 51.74 (26.80), 1:18.70 (26.96), 1:45.77 (27.07), 2:12.96 (27.19), 2:39.80 (26.84), 3:06.63 (26.83), 3:33.76 (27.13), 4:00.63 (26.87), 4:26.58 (25.95)
Smith had been the sixth-fastest swimmer all time with a 4:32.61 from December for Virginia, but definitely dropped the hammer today.
Additionally, Smith’s time this morning stands fifth all time in the performances list behind four different Ledecky performances from the last year.
Georgia’s Amber McDermott qualified second this morning in 4:35.17 with Runge putting up a smooth 4:35.28 to set up an epic battle tonight as the third seed.

The trio will be vying for Caitlin Leverenz’s NCAA and American record of 1:51.77 set for California in 2012.
A swimoff for eighth place happened with Georgia’s Annie Zhu tying Ohio State’s Ashley Vance with 1:56.16s. Zhu’s breaststroke delivered her the win, 1:56.71-1:57.01.
