17 Pool Records Fall in Raleigh Onslaught as Texas Women, NC State Men Roll

A total of 17 pool records fell Friday night in the historic onslaught that was the Texas and NC State dual meet.

Texas No. 2 ranked women’s team romped to a 130-68 win over the eight-ranked Wolfpack. NC State’s No. 3 men’s team beat ninth-ranked Texas, 130-92.

Texas’s women’s team had the largest share of the records with seven. It included all three relays. Emma Kern, Lydia Jacoby, Olivia Bray and Ava Longi went 1:34.24 to win the 200 medley. Grace Cooper, Emma Sticklen, Longi and Emma Davidson captured the 200 free relay in 1:27.65. Kelly Pash, Longi, Davidson and Erin Gemmell went 3:12.22 to win the 400 free relay.

Pash took down two records, going 1:42.88 to win the 200 free and 1:54.47 to win the 200 individual medley. Sticklen won the 100 butterfly in 50.39, a Wills R. Casey Aquatic Center best time. Anna Elendt went 57.51 in the 100 breast, the third fastest time in the nation in that event.

Gemmell won the 500 free, with Erica Sullivan second, while Gemmell was second to Pash in the 200 free. Elendt, Jacoby (58.15) and Channing Hanley went 1-2-3 in the 100 breast.

NC State’s best swim on the women’s side was a doozy, Katharine Berkoff going 49.82 to set her home pool record in the 100 backstroke. That’s the second fastest dual meet swim ever, trailing only Gretchen Walsh.

The NC State men dominated from the start. Aiden Hayes, Sam Hoover, Luke Miller and Quentin McCarty went 1:23.04 in the 200 medley relay to set a pool record. They did the same in the 200 free relay, with Noah Henderson, McCarthy (with an 18.68 split), Drew Salls and Jerry Fox going 1:16.23. McCarty, Fox, Miller and Hoover capped it with a 2:48.24 time in the 400 free relay.

Kacper Stokowski took possession of the 100 back pool record by winning in 44.37. Daniel Diehl put his name on the record board for the first of what could prove to be many times by going 1:43.11 in the 200 IM. Lance Norris blitzed the 1,650 free with a time of 14:48.34, a pool mark.

Stokowski was also second in the 200 free. Miller and Noah Bowers went 1-2 in the 100 fly. Ross Dant won the 500 free.

Texas’s men went home with a pair of pool marks. Luke Hobson went 1:31.88 to win the 200 free, his best of the season and a pool record. Jake Foster went 51.33 in the 100 breast to set a record.

Will Scholtz was second to Foster in the 100 breast. Nate Germonprez was the runner-up in the 200 IM, while Hobson was second in the 500 free and Will Modglin was second in the 100 back.

Texas dominated diving on both sides. Bridget O’Neil scored 342.98 points to win 1-meter on the women’s side and 354.23 to capture 3-meter. The Longhorns grabbed the top four spots in the latter.

Noah Duperre set a pool record in 3-meter diving with a score of 415.74, less than a point ahead of Nick Harris. Harris won 1-meter with 393.53 points with Duperre second.
