16 Tokyo Olympians Highlight USA Water Polo’s 2023 Pan Am Games Rosters

The United States will go to the 2023 Pan Am Games this month with 16 Olympic holdover from the Tokyo Games as they prep for Paris.

Seven of the women who won gold in Tokyo more than two years ago are included, led by team captain and three-time Olympic champion Maggie Steffens. Rachel Fattal, Kaleigh Gilchrist, Ashleigh Johnson, Amanda Longan and Maddie Musselman are the other Tokyo Olympians.

Nine men from the team that placed sixth in Tokyo will take part, led by Ben Hallock. Among the men. Alex Obert returns to the fold after taking a break from the sport since the Tokyo Games.

The tournament in Santiago, Chile, will serve as a qualifier for the Paris Olympics. Both teams play three group-stage games, starting Oct. 30. The finals are Nov. 4.

The women open with Chile, then Puerto Rico and Brazil in the group stage. The men play Mexico, Puerto Rico and Brazil.

The U.S. men have won the last six Pan Am Games titles, dating to 1995, and even of the last 10. They have failed to make the final in just one of 18 Pan Am Games, the inaugural competition in 1951.

The U.S. women have medaled at all six editions since women’s water polo was introduced in 1999. It lost the first final to Canada and has beaten the Canadians in the last five finals.
