1500 Worlds Medalists Florian Wellbrock & Sarah Kohler Announce Engagement
Two of Germany’s best distance swimmers Florian Wellbrock and Sarah Kohler announced their engagement Wednesday morning. Both swimmers medaled at the 2019 World Championships in the 1500 freestyle with Wellbrock taking the gold medal and Kohler taking the silver in the women’s race.
Both Wellbrock and Kohler are favorites to win medals in the 800 and 1500 freestyle at next summer’s Olympic Games, as both have already solidified qualification before the COVID-19 pandemic pushed the Games back a full year.
Wellbrock and Kohler each had tremendous success in the pool in 2019, with Wellbrock winning the 10K gold medal at the World Championships, along with his 1500 free gold, to solidify qualification in open water at the Olympic Games. This gold medal earned him the Open Water Swimmer of the Year by this publication.
Kohler broke the world record in the 1500 freestyle in short course meters in late 2019 in addition to her silver and German record in the long course version at the 2019 Worlds. Kohler also broke a legendary national record in the 800 free that belonged to Anke Mohring dating all the way back to the East German doping era of the 1980’s.
Glückwunsch ????
