As much as we swimmers hate to admit it, we can be very predictable, and that creates swimmer stereotypes. Depending on your stroke, you often possess a few specific traits. Sharing these traits with fellow strokers helps you to bond over the pain you endure during practice.
13 Swimmer Stereotypes, And A Few For Divers Too
You know you’re a backstroker when…
- You know exactly how many lights are in the ceiling of your pool
- You know the importance of tinted goggles during the summer
- You know how to pull on the lane line without being caught
- High-fiving someone while swimming is a personal victory
You know you’re a breaststroker when…
- You don’t know how to point your toes
- When you are forced to kick freestyle, you actually move backwards
- Everyone on the team is taller than you
You know you’re a flyer when…
- Shakira’s song, “Hips Don’t Lie” is about you
- You have the biggest bench press on the team
- Your shoulders are permanently hunched over
You know you’re a sprinter when…
- For punishment, your coach makes you swim a 500
- You are genuinely confused every time you aren’t allowed to swim free for a stroke set
- You have better breath control than all of your teammates
You know you’re a diver when…
- You own those cute little towels you use to dry off, do those even work?
- The farthest distance you can swim without losing your breath is from the middle of the diving well to the edge of the pool
- You can do a handstand in basically any setting
